Age 7 in America

After watching the documentary, I could not stop thinking about how children are aware of the environment around them. These children are well aware of the social issues such as drug abuse, marriage and ethnicity. These children are so enlightened about these social issues for their age.

The story of Luis was very touching. A 7 years old boy taking care of his other siblings is not something you see every day. What is disheartening is that, his is not only the case. This is a real issue in the American societies. Luis says that he lives with his uncles and parents. The house accommodates 11 people. This is proving of how poverty has led to child endangerment in our societies. Anything can happen to Luis in the course of him taking care of the other siblings.

The rich girls seem to feel that being rich is an entitlement. They wear a uniform to school while the poor kids do not. This is a segregation of some kind. I think there should a requirement for all schools to have specific uniforms for the kids. This will make all the students in a specific school look alike.

At 7 years of age, these kids have big dreams. Luis wants to own a big house and enough food. The rich and the poor all have dreams. Some wan to be doctors, teachers, comedians and scientists. However, the environment at which these children are brought up also affects their dreams.  .  These children have different views about the back and white people. The Chinese girl is ordered by the father not to interact with black people because they are bad people. The issue of racism seems to be very alive in the minds of these young children.

Response to Susanna Leigh

Thanks for the touching insights Susanna, the story of Luis was very touching to me too. Imagine a 7 years old boy taking care of other siblings. If something like a fire erupted in the house, it would be disastrous. The bad thing is that his case is not rare; it is common in our society today. However, the responsibility bestowed on him, he has realistic dreams. He wants to be rich and not the richness we all dream off. He wishes to have the basic commodities such as food, house and he would be happy. He very well understands at his age that money is not everything in life.  Kate and her friends on the other hands feel that being rich is an entitlement. They want to follow the footsteps of their mother by having a career before marriage.  They have big dreams of owning a lot of money.

Response to Diana Carrion

Great thinking Diana, the neighborhood and economic status under which a child is brought up have an impact on their life. The boy who could not ride his bicycle downstairs for fear of losing it has a limited social life. Such kind of neighborhood does exist in our cities. Other children describe where they first saw a gun or someone abusing drugs.  A 7 years old boy who knows about drugs and guns can be a disaster in future. Due to the economic status of Luis family, he is forced to look after his other siblings. This is child endangerment but his case is not special. Such cases are common in the poor neighborhoods. The rich kid’s think they are entitled to being rich but the poor kids understands that money is not all there is in life. Other things unlimited access to food, house, and land can also make one happy.
