The world is transforming rapidly with innovations and technological advancements. The increasing population marks increasing need for more sources of energy in line with development agendas. Energy sources vary from renewable sources to carbon-fueled sources. Carbon fueled sources are an impediment to climate change agenda, and there is the dire need for nations to realign their climate care strategies to prevent the epidemic of global warming. Global warming has had adverse effects in the world making it a contentious issue. Climate change requires direct address lest we doom the next generation. In California, climate change has affected the ecosystem in cruel ways and is bound to influence our culture.

Climate change has resulted in California contemporarily witnessing sea level rise, losses to the Sierra snowpack, drought, forest fires, and public health derailment. The worst drought in California’s history was seen from 2012 to 2016. Current fire season in the western United States is dire with great destruction due to it lasting long and being intense. As temperatures rise due to global warming, most land covered by forests and rangelands in California are at risk of fires with the direst wildfires have occurred in the last 14 years. The air quality (classified worst in the nation) in the area is detrimental to pegging infants, elderly, and those with chronic heart disease at risk. The sea level rises along California’s coast and is projected to increase rising. Sea rise in California sets the inhabitants at risk of facing floods with most of the population working and residing in the coastal counties. The other risk being contamination of San Joaquin Delta which supplies residents with water.  The Sierra Nevada snowpack (crucial natural reservoir of water) is under threat of melting due to current high temperature creating the risk of floods. In the future, climate change may cause a rapid shake of the ecosystem with loss of essential agents. Coral reefs run a high risk of extinction with 50% of the corals lost in the recent 30 years. Coral reefs play an integral role in the water/fisheries ecosystem. Islands are bound to be lost because of flooding such as in Abaiang, Kiribati. The extinction of endangered species is bound soon. For example, in Indonesia, Levser Ecosystem that contains the rhino, tiger, and orangutan are facing the risk of extinction. California has a biologically diverse ecosystem with endangered animal and plant species. Climate change will affect our culture. Remedies such as fiscal policies are bound to impact our culture — for example, the imposition of tax on cigarettes in a bid to discourage smokers from polluting the air. Climate change may deter employeeas that rely on fisheries from fishing given depletion of coral reefs has an adverse impact on fish life. Our lifestyles may be forced to change drastically to tone down the harmful effects of temperature change such as change eating habits from beef to chicken given cattle emit a lot of methane in the atmosphere.

It is the duty of every individual in California to contribute to solving adverse effects of climate change. Utilization of alternative sources of energy such as solar panels can be helpful. The citizens should also use their mandate of voting wisely to select leaders who will spearhead the address of climate change issues. Residents should spread awareness among themselves and also hold companies who pollute the environment liable for their actions.
