Diversity in Nursing

Abstract

This study focuses on finding out what is leading to low nursing diversity. It starts by showing how the nursing demographics are under-representing their communities to identify the leading cause of the low diversity. The study points out that there is a high rate of students from minority ethnic leaving their nursing programs before completion. The study, therefore, prepares to research on the causes of the high rate of attrition of such category of students. One of the primary cause is active learning. Students who cannot participate in class such as group discussion feels disconnected where they decide to leave school. The study hopes to impact the nursing faculties and administrators by providing an understanding of the influence of active learning on student’s decision to drop the program. With the information, it is hoped that the faculty will be able to create a learning environment that encourages the student to study.

Diversity in nursing

The general area of focus of the study is on nursing diversity in the workforce. It involves examining the nurses who complete clinical training to understand why their numbers do not represent the community they serve fully(Abrums, Resnick, & Irving, 2010).  The specific problem under research is the causes of the experienced high attrition of ethnic minority undergraduate nursing students. Ethnic minority undergraduate nursing students face several challenges which make them withdraw from the program. I will major on how active learning causes the students to withdraw. To impact on the problem of high attrition, I plan to come up with programs which will incorporate the students from an ethnic minority into the nursing program in need of interventions to cope up with the influence of active learning. Also, I hope to create a faculty which fosters student learning environment to make them succeed in the cause.

 

The main variables to be considered are the different forms of active learning which includes class discussion, knowledge level examination question, group work, and higher-order thinking actives(Braxton, Milem, & Shaw, 2000). The study will also consider the variables student’s demographic characteristics, precollege and current academic attainment, individual level of motivation to succeed, level of commitment to the institution as well as their degree of social integration. I hope to create an understanding of how active learning influence Ethnic minority undergraduate nursing students persistence and departure decisions. Also, I hope to provide information which will build an understanding of the under-representation of minority nursing student’s departure decision. With the information, nursing faculty and administrators will be able to cultivate active learning strategies which will minimize student’s attrition.
