Diversity in the workplace

There is a lot of diversity in the workplace in the current period. This has brought about enhancement in the performance of companies. People with different features can take part in the labor market. This has led to efficiency in the employment environment. There are various types of workplace diversity. They include variety in the requirements in the jobs. In many organizations, there are multiple positions, where employees are charged with different responsibilities. As a result, there exists diversity in the qualifications of the participants in the work environment (Simons and Kimberly 173). There is also gender diversity in the labor market. Both males and females have equal chances of participating in productive activities. This is contrary to what used to happen before, where lucrative jobs were associated with men. In the current world, gender roles in the employment environment are changing.

Race and ethnicity is another common form of diversity in the workplace. The United States is composed of people from different origins, who participate in productive activities. This implies the people from diverse ethnicities have an essential role in the employment environment (Meares et al., 9). The participants in the labor markets are of different ages and from diverse generations. In most cases, young people occupy the entry-level positions. On the other hand, older people are more experienced in the work environment; hence they hold managerial positions in organizations. It is not possible for the participants in the employment environment to b of the same age. The older people need to be replaced when they retire from their jobs. As a result, it is not possible for the job market to be dominated by people of the same generation. Diversity is significant to ensure continuity of operation in the employment environment.

There is also diversity in the level of ability of the participants in the employment environment. In the current world, people with disability have the right to participate in productive activities. They can secure jobs provided that they have the required qualifications. People in the work environment are also from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. However, this does not give the people from high-class backgrounds an advantage of over the ones from the poor economic status. Both the rich and poor people are active participants in the labor market. Additionally, people from different religious beliefs are active participants in the work environment (Hicks 381). What matters is the qualification that an individual possesses but not their religion.

Diversity in the workplace is associated with various benefits. First, it helps to enhance economic performance, because people with the best skills are selected irrespective of their origin. This implies that all potential people can participate in productive activities. Diversity is associated with the increased performance of companies. People with different ideas combine their skills and use them towards the progress of the company (Simons and Kimberly 179). Another importance of diversity in the workplace is that it enhances equality in the labor market.  All the people with the required skills are given equal chances of participating in the job environment. As a result, diversity in the labor market should be encouraged. Difference in the workplace also increases the gross domestic product of countries. The skills of people are utilized in productive activities without considering the origin of a person or their background.
