Eileen Chang Reflection

Eileen Chang was a Chinese celebrity in public media and a reader as well, she was very successful in her career as a journalist, and she had won the love and confidence of the people. Her death surprised many especially back in her country of origin China. She had become so famous that she had to change her places of the resident in order to avoid catching the attention of her followers. She was born in China but opted to move to the United States at a young age after the separation of her parents.

Eileen writing art began back in China at the age of twelve years when she wrote a journal in English describing her experience in Shanghai. She studied at the Hong Kong University during world war two. Life becomes challenging because the troops that were involved in the war had takenover the university (Lee& Li, 1999). She was even forced to defer at the university for one year in order to allow the troops to use the facilities of the university during the war. When she resumed her studies, the university had already been takenover by soldiers from other countries such as Japan who participated in the war.

She had a passion for writing such that even during the war she continued to write about her experiences at the university and the challenges that she went through at the university. She wrote short stories that were published in major magazines of Hong Kong(Lee, & Li, 1999). The writing made her famous in the city. The popularity she gained in her articles made her discover that she had a talent in writing. This gave her the confidence to continue writing and improve the skill to write more interesting articles. Within two years she had already written dozens of articles majoring on factors concerning the people and the war. She became a celebrity at a young age; people knew her by the articles she wrote about.

After completing the university, she married but later divorced with her husband Hu Lancheng who was working for the government. After the divorce Chang decided to start writing short stories about the things that were of concern to the people. She wrote short stories about love, and the books were all sold within four days after being published(Lee& Li, 1999). She continued to write short stories until the attention of the public to the writer diminished, and she left China to the United States in search of greener pastures. In the United States, she continued to write stories for forty years until her death. The uniqueness of the stories that she wrote about was about the things that the people went through.

In one of her books, she wrote about the tough life that the people living in Shanghai went through. She was surprised by the loyalty that the people living in Shanghai gave to the leaders despite getting poor services from the government. Most of her literally work about the people living in Shanghai and the kind of lifestyle that they were living (Lee & Li, 1999). The books were sophisticated with good flattery to the readers. She also wrote about the desires of the people to transform their old mix into new modern life through the interaction of the people with other people from different parts of the world.

The stories that Chang wrote about after she migrated to the United States had urban content especially the differences between the culture of people living in HongKong city and those living in the towns in the United States. She gave the readers of her books what it was like living in cities where people come from different parts of the world with a different culture.

All the experiences that she come across in the united states she transformed them into stories and wrote then for the readers to get a feeling of her experiences in the united states. She had to move to different cities in the United States in order to gain knowledge of life in those places in order to write about them. She also wrote fictional stories addressing various issues that she felt was of concern. Such fiction stories include the book she wrote about western modernism even though she had never visited western countries.

Chang spent her entire life researching on materials that she wanted to include in her books that she wrote about. It’s possible to reconstruct all the activities that she engaged in and the place she went to through the stories that she wrote(Lee& Li, 1999). The novels reflected the things she went through and the challenges that she faced. The characters she used in her fiction work were of people she had met in different places. The places and buildings that she visited were also included in the fiction stories that she wrote about. The fiction storiesincluded a blend of both experiences in China and the United States. Chang got emotional in some of the skills that she had and the people she had met, she imagined what such people went through and wrote fiction stories based on the experiences.

Chang close friends described him as a movie-loving person; hence she also used to write fictional stories based on the movies that she had watched(Lee & Li, 1999). She would relate various perspectives of life which include the relationships that people have around marriage, family, and fights that they engage in. In her fiction work, she believed that their culture and experiences influenced people that they had while growing up. The experiences that kids have while growing up. Kids learn from their environment and their parents.

Chang hoped that she could change people through her work by making them understand what other people are going through in their lives. She wanted to bring change through writing. She was able to reveal that the challenges that people living in Hong Kong were the same challenges that people living in united states were going through. She addressed the nationalism of the people she met, gender norms and race factor in different cities. Also, she featured nationalism in her books and other materials that she wrote.
