English 103 Reflection

The past six weeks have been informative as we learnt a lot in poetry, fiction and drama. I have come to appreciate the role of these in delivering informative information to the world. The choice of content and the way such information is conveyed to the readers is an integral part of English literature. For instance, in poetry, the concepts of narration, symbolism, figurative language and tone are essential aspects of poetry. These are the major traits that I have come to appreciate as we read through various poems. I have also noted with concern the role poetry, drama and fiction can be used to educate the community on thorny issues that affect the society. For instance, the question of male chauvinism as explained in the play ‘’trifles’’ is an important issue in the modern society.

Other themes that remain outstanding throughout the six weeks of learning also include; the theme of death, the meaning of life, gender roles in society, and self-destruction through insecurity. All these themes are important to contemporary readers because they are virtually universal themes that will always be part of the human condition.  The six weeks have made me appreciate the useful role of poetry, fiction and drama to the society. I also noticed that many of the poems and stories brought up problems in the world that need to be addressed.  This form of literature can be essential in changing the social mindset for the better.
