Explain how hypocrisy and corruption manifested in the story of Rootless Weed

Corruption is a form of dishonesty that is performed especially by a person in power to earn or give an illicit benefit. Hypocrisy is practice manifesting a false virtue or goodness while concealing the real character that is the opposite of what is the real of person. Hypocrisy and bribery have highly been used in the story of Rootless Weed.

In the story of Rootless Weed, the profiteering land developers and shady contractors engage in corrupt practices to clean out any mess that they caused and escape the punishment of the law. The land developers and contractors also met the officials in charge of contracts and projects to get their projects approved through bribery, flattery, and fraudulent means.

“Profiteering developers and shady contractors took advantage of the land shortage and fought with one another to be first to present their petitions, privately meeting the officials in charge and gaining approval for their projects through flattery, fraud, and bribery” (Nenashigusa, 593)

The land developers are only concerned with meeting and quenching their ever-increasing thirst for wealth and material gain. They exploit any opportunity that presents itself by all means irrespective of the methods which they are going to use to get things done. They pretend to be considerate of people’s welfare, but the real fact is that they are only concerned with their welfare. “I would like to become a landlord in one of the new hell blocks,” proposed one. “But the payments  I get for manure from the houses of the hungry ghosts aren’t going up at all”  590 , “So I beg you to raise the special seasonal tenant fees to two hundred coppers per festival” (Nenashigusa, 590)

The monks are too Hippocratic as they propagate the vices that they forbid. They pretend to be holly and spotless while in the actual sense they are trying to hide their real dark side. According to tradition, the monks are not allowed to have sexual intercourse with women, but in their hidden moments, they are busy chasing them. They refer to loving the young actor as a lesser crime. “How about giving him an easier route over the Mountain of Swords? And he likes young men, so he must like pots.45 How about letting him off with a soak in a boiling cauldron?” (Nenashigusa, 593)
