Face up to Social Media

Reading through Jurgenson’s piece of work “the IRL Fetish,” it is a clear reflection of our daily interaction with social media. The author clearly illustrates the impact of media platforms and devices, such as mobile phones, to help us access the media. Thanks to the use of social media, the world has now become a big family, and people have been so close to each other so far. No matter how far away it is, people can communicate and socialize effectively. The author creatively presents his ideas and makes it clear of what he is discussing. He can give a clear explanation, and an individual can relate the issue being discussed with something more familiar. The use of personification and metaphor perfected his work, and I was sure to use these styles in my writing so that I can emphasize my points using figurative language.

The use of personification has been fascinating in the essay. Jurgenson personifies twitter and Instagram as having lips and eyes respectively. Someone who might not be able to understand these terms can easily relate their functions and importance by merely comparing them to the lips and eyes. The use of this rhetoric feature helps everyone understand what discussion is all about irrespective of an individual’s age. A metaphor is another useful style that the author has used to spice it up the essay and make more sense to the readers. In the article he states that “Facebook is real life,” this statement emphasizes the significance of Facebook. Life is precious and can only be real if an individual is comfortable and enjoying it; hence the metaphor makes Facebook a precious application that should be adopted by individuals. The use of personification and metaphor made his work amazing and was sure to use these styles in my writing so that I can emphasize my points using figurative language. As a student, I have noted how fellow students love to use personification and metaphor in their communication, and I thought that it would be more familiar to my audience if I used the same. I also thought that these features would reflect well on my personality because I am the type of person who loves imitating objects as I make fun. The use of parenthesis is also evident in the essay; some of the information would not have made sense without additional information. Jurgenson’s first paragraph, for instance, he states “emails are just a few taps away or pushed directly to your buzzing and chirping computer- anachronistically still called a phone.” The additional information clarifies the information given.

Jurgenson explains how many other writers have emphasized the importance of being offline as a way of building up relationships. He criticizes them for thinking that being offline means not being online. He pointed out how individuals used the Internet for offline transactions and pointed out that giving up online use is ancestral, unrealistic and foolish. His point of view made me reflect deeply on the influence of social media on society and individuals. I realized that it was true that sometimes people do think that social media is the reason people are disconnected from each other. Focusing on how parents are hard on their children by referring to them as social media addicts. I thought it was critical i write my piece so that people who were against students being online would get to know its significance. From my personal experience and those of other students who complained to me. I thought it was essential to address the advantages of embracing both the online and offline. Face to face conversation is failing just because people are not attached. Unlike the author, I had to acknowledge this fact and instead of criticizing those who are against the use of social media I had to embrace their point of view and give a solution of how the use of social media would work without interrupting offline relationships. “It is okay to feel that we need to embrace the offline if we need to excel, but do you realize how important social media is when it comes to using social media? Should we forget about Google, and table around you as you give us answers to our research? Where exactly will you have obtained the knowledge from”. In my quote I was merely addressing most parents and guardians who are so hard on their children not realizing that sometimes their children are online because they want to learn. It was necessary to use these rhetoric questions as readers would try to answer the questions and realize that indeed being online is crucial.

I had the same thought as Jurgenson’s concerning the balancing of offline and online. The online depended on the offline, and people’s frequency use of the online depended on how busy and fun, their offline life was. Just like “The IRL Fetish” author, I believed that time spending with friends dining, hiking and all other activities were more igniting with the knowledge that you could share the activities and events on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. I, however, wanted to use a different approach to make my argument relevant. I decided to use Nicholas Carr ideas to criticize and support specific issues. Nicholas is one of the most significant critiques of Jurgenson’s work, and I thought it would be great to use him in place of Sherry Turkle. I also used specific terms such as ‘parents, guardians and students’ to specify the audience I was addressing. In my work, I felt that it was essential to use some more rhetoric features to make my work admirable. The use of rhetoric questions would help in trying to convince those who differ with my point of view. I would ask questions like, suppose people do away with online use and embrace offline that is worshiped, how will you be able to share the good times with the world? Don’t you think it will be a boring life to lead? Such questions will allow my readers to pose and try to answer their questions and determine whether their argument is practical or sensible. I know students who are part of my audience are inquisitive and will always try to look for answers. In most cases, they would approach their teachers, parents, and guardians for help. That would ignite a discussion, and at least they will get to discuss and understand each other. As much as I wanted my article read, I thought it should be something to ignite a discussion and help those who are suffering the social media use ban in silence. I also felt it would be more interesting to make critiques using sarcasm. It would bring humor to my writing, I have discovered how students ignore boring essays, and I thought that I would find the best way of attracting attention. While Jurgenson criticizes directly, I would use sarcasm to make my critiques indirectly. That would help me deal with pressure from my readers who would want to respond to my piece as they will not feel directly attacked.

Jurgenson’s writing strongly supports the use of media as opposed to some writers who think that media has corrupted the social life of people. In the first two paragraphs, we realize that he concentrates more on drawing attention and showing how society as embraced media. Friends and families are all engrossed in its use and getting much from it. He then goes ahead and makes some critiques on those who feel that media use is replacing the physical socialization. These create a clear flow of information, and it is something I had to apply to my piece of work.  We both believe that ‘online’ was useful and not mutually exclusive to offline. In my case, my parents and other older friends and family members have always felt like I am misusing social media. My mother is always complaining about how I spend most of the time on Facebook and Instagram. My father complains that social media has consumed a significant part of my time- most of which I should use to study. My parents being elderly feel that I am lost in the digital world. They complain that I overexpose my life by posting pictures on Facebook and other platforms. They believe that private life is the best way to live. Several times my grandparents criticize my mode of dressing saying that I have started embracing the dress codes I see on Television. Their perspective of social media has made me adopt a different approach to sensitize them. I thought it would be best to indicate the importance of online. My work was different from Jurgenson in the sense that I did not only focus on the positive side. I reported both the positive and negative consequences of being both online and offline. My take was to help people think I am biased, my writing intended to create awareness in the most natural way possible and I believed that it was possible if I discussed both sides and allowed my audience see sense in my argument.

Unlike Jurgenson who has only given examples of Facebook, and Instagram, I thought it would do me better if I used as many cases as possible to illustrate my point. I chose to add WeChat, LinkedIn, and YouTube on my explanation for the support of social media. I thought that Facebook and Instagram were more popular at the time that Jurgenson wrote his article but currently YouTube, Wechat and LinkedIn have become popular. More of the students are seen logging into YouTube downloading music, and video lessons are being stored in YouTube an indication that it has become more popular. WeChat is China’s social software, which is used almost all over China. With such software, life becomes simple, making friends, contacting and even paying bills. LinkedIn is also commonly used, and it allows users to connect their twitter account it, it means that users can access Twitter information through their LinkedIn. With how popular these other platforms are getting, I thought it would be fair to talk about various platforms to attract as many readers as possible.

In his writing, Jurgenson is not afraid to condemn hypocrites. He even states “let us not pretend we are in some special, elite group with access to the pure offline, turning the real into fetish and regarding everyone else as a little less real and a little less human.” The statement is a warning to those people who still enjoy the goodness that comes with being online but still condemn people for being online. This is a bold step that he takes because he is ready for critiques. Jurgenson is fully responsible for what he stands for, I, however, chose to take a less provoking approach by appreciating the ideas of those that would oppose my argument but illustrating that “even though the use of social media may pose some challenges, it is not all bad.” Many advantages come with their use. Jurgenson in his article says “Writer after writer laments the loss of a sense of disconnection, of boredom (now redeemed as a respite from anxious info-cravings), of sensory peace in this age of always-on information, omnipresent illuminated screens, and near-constant self-documentation. Most famously, there is Sherry Turkle, who is amassing fame for decrying the loss of real, offline connection”. Such an approach would sound disrespectful to most parents and guardians with the same stand as Sherry; therefore, I had to approach the issue peacefully.
