Interviewing process

Interviewing process

Bearing in mind that the aim of the interview was to get detailed and firsthand information regarding the social, political and economic situation of Latin America countries I chose to interview two people, a Mexican and El Salvadorian immigrants living and studying in America. The two had a detailed understanding of the situation in their countries of origin. Having also lived in America for some time, they could comfortably help me draw an unbiased comparison of the American and the Latin countries, in terms of the wellbeing of the countries’ citizenry.

The entire interview was conducted within the school compound. The entire interviewing process went on as smoothly as possible. The interviews were cooperative and very helpful in the entire process. With the help, if the interviewing guide, I was able to capture all the necessary information relevant to this assignment.

Information derived from the interview

Most of the information gathered from the two interviews was from the perspective of Latin Americans living in the United States of America. Additionally, from a critical analysis of the interviewee’s responses, one could tell that they both came from young struggling families who still had a deep-rooted culture from their countries of origin. For the purpose of understanding the situation of the immigrants in America, it would also be important to note that the two interviewees are young Hispanic living in the US.

From the interview with Jenifer, a Mexican, one can clearly tell that the Mexican immigrants living in the US were, to some extent, still stuck with their motherland culture.  In the interview, she says that his father still insists on maintaining the Mexican culture in their current American setting. For instance, he says his family still eats spicy Mexican food. She also says that the father insists that they should water poured into a bucket while taking a shower. This information is proof that despite how the immigrants from Latin countries may seem to have assimilated into the American systems and culture, they still hold onto some aspects of their origin countries’ culture. Arguably, one of the most crucial aspects of their culture that they carry on is their languages. Many of the Latin Americans living in the US, some of whom were even born in the US, are so much conversant with their mother tongue.

The two interviewees seemed to be of the opinion that the political situation in both their countries is unstable and has an adverse effect on the wellbeing of the people living there. For instance, Jenifer said that there was too much corruption in the Mexican political hemisphere. After conducting further research into the issue of Mexican politics and governance, there were numerous publications highlighting the plight of Mexicans in the hands of corrupt and incompetent political leaders. She also highlighted how the countries leadership system had been affected by negative ethnicity. In her view, negative ethnicity was one of the major issues ailing Mexico’s politics. She was of the opinion that, for Mexico to attain America’s stature, in terms of political stability, the country had to undergo structured political reforms. In El Salvador, the civil war that lasted between 1979 and 1992 had a tremendous impact on the country’s political stability. Years after the war ended, the country still suffers the effect of a war that not only had numerous fatalities but also significantly affected the country’s political and economic systems. Since the war, the countries have experienced numerous cases of human rights violation which aren’t even well addressed due to the persisting interference of the judicial systems by influential individuals.

With regard to matters economy, it is certain that Latin American countries are still struggling. El Salvador, for instance, has for so long been struggling to elevate its economy least to a sustainable level. From the interview, I learn that the main currency in El Salvador is the US dollar. I also come into the understanding that the pricing of various items is almost similar in the two countries. However, there is a huge gap between the two countries minimum wage. In the US, the average minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. In Salvador, one of my interviewees revealed to me that his parents were earning as little as $8 a day. This is proof that El Salvador lacks properly drafted remuneration policies. It is also an indication of the poor living conditions in the country. If a person is earning a $7.25 per hour in the US still struggles to make ends meet, one can only imagine the struggles of an El Salvadorian Citizen raising a family with a daily wage of $8. The economic crisis hitting the country can also, to some extent, be associated with the civil war. The war left many of the county’s industries struggling to at least stay afloat. The country has spent a lot of time and resources in an effort to rebuild what was destroyed during the civil war. Evidently, were it not for the effects of the civil war, the country would currently be having a robust and sustainable economy.
