Jack Rakove “The Great Compromise’: Drafting the American Constitution, 1787,”

In the introduction to his article “The Great Compromise’: Drafting the American Constitution, 1787,” author Jack Rakove argues that the accepted narrative of the “pragmatic character” of the delegates that drafted the Constitution must be balanced with “equally persuasive evidence that a concern with principle and theory played a powerful role in the debates of 1787.”  What does he mean by this?  Does the rest of the article provide that evidence?  Please use examples from the reading to support your answer.
