Joseph’s IEP Interview

Joseph’s IEP Interview

Me: What is your role as the member of the IEP team?

Joseph: My major roles in the team involve provision of information regarding Grace and offering consent when necessary. I had to provide consent before the program commenced. I am also tasked with providing information concerning Grace since I spent more time with her hence I understand her better than any other member.

Me: How often does the IEP team meet?

Joseph: We normally meet once a year as a team. During the meetings, there is always an assessment of the progress that has been attained since the implementation of the program.  Changes to the program can be made based on how Grace is responding. I also meet with Grace’s teacher from time to time and she informs me on the current progress and what I might do to help.

Me: Are you comfortable offering contributions during the process?

Joseph: I am very comfortable in this area. It is my daughter that we are talking about. I would do anything to ensure that she achieves the best that she can in life since she is the person that I love the most in the whole world.

Me: Is the process focused on completion of paperwork or helping Grace?

Joseph: From what I have observed during the meetings, the process is focused on helping Grace. The team members tend to ask a lot of questions about Grace so that they can understand her better. This is an indication that they desire to help her. It gives me comfort.

Me: Has Grace shown any measurable gains from the process?

Joseph: Yes, Grace has gained positively from the IEP. She has really improved in terms of her speech. This is something that even the speech pathologist commended in the previous IEP meeting. The problems she was having with oral language have reduced significantly. When it comes to reading and writing, she has improved, though not much. Nowadays I am also not afraid when she is out playing with peers since the injuries she used to get have reduced significantly. I feel happy based on the current progress.

Me: Any concerns about the process?

Joseph: I do not have any concern about the program. Based on her progress, I think everything is working okay.

Me: Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?

Joseph: I think the frequency of the meetings should be increased. It would be good to meet more than once a year since there might be a need to make changes based on the progress.
