New St. Peter’s Church Architecture

Introduction

New St Peters Church’s design has been linked to the best architectural styles. To make it unique, decorative arts such as stained glass, pinnacle, pointed arches, dome shapes have been used in the process. The design that I have developed for this church makes it more attractive to watch and symbolically represent several features in the Old Testament. The religious art has been used heavily in an attempt to inspire the congregations with a great Christian message. Sculptors have been given details of how certain features should be represented in the design process of this church. More so, painting and decorations are supposed to reflect certain times in the Old Testament to make the building symbolically religious. Here is the outline of the design.

Function

The church design will serve many functions once it is complete. The design of this church will prove the greatest architectural design of age. It will inspire people to worship. The design will symbolically support the idea of pilgrimage. Proper design is symbolically important, as it would unite Christians especially during certain occasions such pilgrimage. For instance, the cross would remind Christians of Jesus Christ and His death on the cross. The design of the church developed would also differentiate the roles, place and position of the priests and followers in this church in that the design will provide specific rooms for the priests such as the vestry. Its dome shape will be a scenic feature for even tourists. Its pinnacle is a connection with the Supernatural Being.

Location

New St Peters Church will be built near River Thames. It will be located in the Eastern of River Thames in London. This place is scenic, and the existence of many features makes the location attractive. There is an adequate supply of water and cool weather. An adequate supply of water would be required during the building of the church. In addition, building the church near this location would reflect the diversity of London and its attractiveness. Besides, this location would make this church to be a tourist attraction site since London is a vibrant city of tourists with parks, great architectures, and monumental buildings.

Form

The church will be dome-shaped. The Church’s size will be 450 feet high, 740 feet in length and 450 feet in width. The interior length will be about 690 feet. The interior of the church will have a cross built on the top of the door. Numerous mosaics will be made inside the church. These mosaics must reflect a historical happening in the bible such as the fall of Jericho Walls or the Garden of Eden. The floor of the church will be painted in white while the windows must be tinted. Moreover, inside the church, there will be several statutes that reflect the holy relics of the Old Testament. Outside the church, there will be giant sized pillars that would offer strength to the building. An obelisk of the mother of Jesus would be built at the corner of the pulpit. This would remind Christians of the birth of our savior.

Materials

Understanding the building’s heritage is critical in determining the required materials that would work for the design of the church in place. Traditional materials such as stone, timber, earth old bricks, and sand will be required in large quantity to build the church. Different paintings would also be required. The magnificent art of metalwork would also be required especially during the laying down of the foundation for the church. The building will have to be peppered with certain features that protect the whole building. An instance here is that stone gargoyles that would throw away water from the walls to protect valleys, stone and gutter would be required. Lime is also required in large quantity. The right mortar, sympathetic joints, and plaster must be paired with the traditional materials for building the church. Traditional mortals and lime, which allows movement and breathe, would be useful in this case. Modern materials will include hard bricks, renders, external sealants and mortals made from cement. These materials would provide rigidity, inflexibility since they are strong building materials.

Construction techniques

The church would be constructed using gothic construction techniques. Pointed arches and ribbed vaults would be constructed which is a major gothic innovation. Rather than having rounded arches that have ruled in the past, the construction technique would include the use of pointed arch. Therefore, this will enable construction of more stable and a higher standard church. The church would have large curtains that are filled with stained glass. These walls will support the weight of the roofs and the vaulting. The church will be tall and will have to resist the pressures and winds given the fact that there are relatively great winds in this area.  The construction of pointed vaults is to direct the force of the wind downward and protect the building from collapsing.

Styles

When constructing this church, it is significant to prioritize certain areas. The first thing is to build the pillars and then extend outwards as money and time become available. The best thing to do is to determine the stages of construction. The decoration and drawing of the mosaics in the church may come last after the painting has been done. It may be costly to shore up one part as another part is being built only to have it being removed. The building of the nave will start for instance and which means that the building has to start high up while observing that the facade of the church does not move outwards due to pressure.

Precedent

The building of this church borrows from the modern techniques and styles that were used in the construction of the cathedrals in the Roman Empire. However, there are fundamental improvements that the new design will make. Instead of building rounded arches as it was in the Roman Empire, the design of this church suggests the use of pointed arches so that force would be directed downward. Consequently, this would offer strength to the building. Therefore, the new styles and constructional techniques are an improvement of both the traditional and new ways of building the cathedral.

Expression

The unique features of this church such as mosaics, dome-shape, vestibules, Pinnacle and the cross among many features provides the church with formidable architectural designs that make it not only gothic but also attractive to the Christians and even to those of other religions. The building provides pride to the members of the church. In addition, it will send information to the community on the need to have a church within the vicinity. Its paintings and monuments are greatest reminders of the history and accounts in the bible. Eventually, the building design will provide unity of worship as it provides an effective tool for worshiping.

Conclusion

A church building serves as a unifying symbol to the members. Constructing a church requires much effort particularly in the designing of the building.  The design provided for New St. Peters Church will serve in developing an extremely monumental church that not only serves to unite Christians but to serve as a scenic structure. As such, decoration, painting, building and laying of the outline of the church calls for certain specialties in addition to design. Finally, the design provided above if fully implemented would provide a desirable church building.
