Discussion

How do nurses promote patient safety and improve quality at your workplace (or previous clinical setting)? What changes would you suggest be made on your unit or facility to improve a non-punitive culture of safety?

Solution:

Patient safety and quality care are fundamental aspects of nursing practice (Hood, 2018). In our practice setting, one approach that nurses use to promote patient safety and quality care is hourly rounding. This entails checking on patients, especially those at high risk for falls and pressure ulcers every hour. The rounding also addresses the 4 P’s patient needs which are pain, personal hygiene, possession, and position. More so, it assesses the patient environment to ensure all safety measures such as armband, fall sign, red socks (for a high risk for fall) and bed alarms for all patients are in order.
