My Last thoughts to take with you, Constituents look for leaders who demonstrate an enthusiastic and genuine belief in the capacity of others, who strengthen people’s will, who supply the means to achieve, and who express optimism for the future. Constituents want leaders who remain passionate despite obstacles and setbacks. In uncertain times, leaders with a positive, confident, can-do approach to life and business are desperately needed. Leaders must keep hope alive, even in difficult times. Difficult times are not the time or place for the timid; they call for optimism, imagination, enthusiasm, and hope. How do leaders mobilize the personal and organizational resources to triumph against the odds? The best-kept secret of successful leaders is love: staying in love with leading, with the people who do the work, with what their organizations produce, and with those who honor the organization by using its work. To quote Kouzes & Posner, “Leadership is not an affair of the head. Leadership is an affair of the heart.” I was asked by students what book I felt was the epitome of executive leadership that can be used in organizations. Clearly, I have read many textbooks, including the one from this course, but there is one book that I have read, and re-read, because it is what I consider exemplary in explaining leadership, especially military strategy. It is called, “The Art of War” by Sun Tzŭ. Sun Tzŭ wrote this book over 2500 years ago, but still holds true today. The second book would be anything written by Stephen Covey. I recommend “The 7 habits of Highly Effective People.” One of my favorite quotes, “There are three constants in life…change, choice and principles.” – Stephen Covey. Covey was a great inspirational speaker, but sadly he died a few years ago. I want to take this time to tell you how honored and privileged I feel to have shared this time with you. You have shown me your enthusiasm for the course through your brilliant responses, participation and discussions. If there is anything I can do for you in your life’s journey, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. “The Journey is the Reward”—Steve Jobs Choose one, two, or three of the Chapters from the textbook that you feel are important for you to use as a future leader of an organization or personal business venture.
