Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

Healy Ricardo’s Response

Culture can be defined as people with shared beliefs, ideas, and attitude. On the other hand, diversity encompasses the situation in which people have different cultures that are open and may have same or different ideas.

Natalie Harris’ Response

Culture refers to the beliefs and behaviors portrayed by a particular group of people. Conversely, diversity is the acceptance and respect that each person is unique and embracing our individual differences.

Kelly Hamilton’s Response

Culture refers to the lifestyle of a person. It includes the values, religion, and behaviors of a person. With diversity, this is an inherited trait. It encompasses features a person does not have control such as race, sexual orientation, and gender.

The above answers from my three colleagues recognize values, beliefs, ideas, attitude and behaviors as aspects of culture. Some of the examples that encompass aspects of culture are the way individuals live in society. The behavior of people depends on their attitude. Another example is the religion people follow. There was one answer that was similar to what I studied in this course, and it was on the definition of diversity. One of my colleagues defined diversity as an understanding of the different cultures that may or may not share same ideas. Another colleague agreed that a person cannot control diversity since it shows the uniqueness and individual differences.

The aspects that were omitted included the perception, skills, and reasons that make individuals unique. Since diversity talks about uniqueness, we need to understand why people are unique. Additionally, people need to understand that as time goes, the culture in our society changes. People start to embrace new ideas, behaviors, beliefs and attitude. For instance, currently, people living in the US tend to embrace the American culture and forget the African or Indian culture they were thought.

Thinking about my colleagues’ definitions of culture and diversity has influenced my thinking about this topic in many ways. First, I had an understanding of the critical role that culture plays in our lives. Culture influences our perception of the world, life, dreams and society. The answers from my colleagues made me understand that we learn culture by observing the behavior of individuals in society. Moreover, people have the choice to follow the culture they prefer. Second, I learned that with diversity, we could recognize the uniqueness in ourselves. It is also possible for use to share same skills, ideas, behaviors, and beliefs.
