Physical security refers to the protection of people’s properties from damage or loss that could affect people, assets and properties. Although cybersecurity is taken to be more severe and physical security is equally important. There is a growing improvement in the development of physical security with the introduction of more technology including the use of Information Technology (IT) and artificial intelligence (AI). Physical safety and cyber security are more interconnected, and there is a need to ensure there is security. When maintaining data and tangible assets belonging to people, there is a need to ensure that they are safe and free from any theft and mishandling. There is need to foresee situations regarding what could happen if physical security gets breached. Failure to have well put mechanisms for the protection of tangible assets then intruders may take advantage of the case to steal.

An excellent example of a situation where there was a breach of physical security was in Chicago Colocation center where intruders entered the facility and spoilt people’ properties. The facility was attacked four times from 2005 to 2007 and properties worth thousand dollars were destroyed. The people responsible for securing the location did not put proper measures to protect the facilities. The intruders took the advantage to break in and kill the properties. The incident took place when two individual broke into the facility being masked and broke through the fence. The intruders found the security officers not prepared to handle the situation. The intruders cut through the wall using a power saw. The management did not put better mechanisms to handle the situation in future, and this made it possible for the event to reoccur for four times within a year.

To address the situation, the company should have put hidden duress alarms to address safety concerns for personal matters. The signals could have alerted the security officers that there is entrance by the thieves and they could have taken a better measure and methods to address the issue. The company could have addressed the issue through the installation of individual duress alarm which protects individuals. The alarms ring in case an individual is attacked alerting the attacked party. The individuals attacked could have informed the nearest police posts, and the necessary step could have been taken on a timely basis. Technical surveillance could have protected the company from being attacked by the intruders. The surveillance helps to detect any unauthorized persons from getting access to essential areas and conversations. Technical surveillance also helps to reduce any tendencies that are likely to affect electronic eavesdropping.

Physical security can also get secured through a proper front counter that delays physical access. Delaying of physical access ensures that intruders get delayed before they can get access to tangible assets and data. The other key issue that should have been addressed is training the employees on how to deal with insecurity issues in case they observe any signs of insecurity. There should be constant training regarding how to deal with the insecurity issue to reduce damage and losses.

In conclusions, physical security should be given enough attention. More resources and time should be directed towards dealing with physical security issues. Training employees can help to deal with insecurity issues, and this can be done twice per year to get employees to remain prepared.
