Piaget’s theory of cognitive developments

Piaget’s theory of cognitive developments relates to the development of self-evaluation skills in a significant way. The approach helps in understanding how children acquire knowledge and the nature of intelligence. In this theory Piaget illustrates a systematic way in four stages:

 

Sensor motor birth to 2 year

Preoperational stage; ages 2-7

Concrete operational stage; ages 7-10

Formal operational stage; age 12 and up

Piaget explains how a child’s move, sound, touch, taste, and smell are their methods of learning. Kids add new knowledge in their daily interactions. Piaget supposes that intelligence is something that develops within stages.He argues that it is not that older children are more intelligent than younger children, but it is the difference in quality and quantity of their thoughts that sets the difference. In theory, he explains that cognitive development is what sets the difference in the self-evaluation skills of children and those of adults. The cognitive development process in early stages involves actions and later advances to changes in how the brain works.

 

The construction of thought processes which is the cognitive process entails how one can solve problems and make decisions. Growth from childhood to adulthood is much attached to cognitive development which significantly affects the development of self-evaluation skills in different individuals.

 

In the third and the fourth stages, self-evaluation start taking place in a more defined way. The ordinary processes in children such as crawling and walking are categories in the first stage of Cognitive development. Real engagement and the language of interaction are also part of the first stage. Understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen is a significant development in these stages.

 

In the second stage-preoperational stage- the simple fact of objects been constant is still gradually developing.Kids at this stage learn a lot through play. Self-evaluation begins to form at the third stage when children start to use logic. They try evaluating the thoughts of others and  relating themselves to similar situations. This brings about new skills of interaction with the society and at this level, they begin to understand their personalities. In the cognitive operational stage, they start to think more about the community, morals, religion, sex, philosophical and critical thinking.

This process of self-evaluation greatly dependents on cognitive development. Exposure to violence through media has adverse effects on cognitive development. Individuals learn new self evaluation skills depending on the exposure. If the video games children entertain themselves with have violence as a theme, the brain adapts in that mindset. During the first stage of growth, such exposure feeds a lot of unconscious and conscious information to the developing child.

In conclusion, exposure to violence is it in cartoons, movies t.v shows or news on religious disputes, hunger, and social misunderstanding leads to serious Psychological effects like increased aggressive behaviors and excitement towards violence. This develops a sense of contempt in growing children. A study with samples is needed to estimate the exposure of children to media violence accurately.
