The separate image from Britain started to emerge after the French and Indian war in America. The war was between France and Britain. The two colonial masters were fighting for the control of North America. When the war ended in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris, Britain was the winner and settled in North America.  However, Britain realized that the war had been very costly and thought it necessary for the colonies to cover part of the cost. Britain argued that it only engaged in the war to protect the colonies and thus they should cover the cost. This gave rise to the new taxes of 1764 and 1765. The Englishmen however rejected the new taxes and started viewing the Britain’s as enslavers rather than protectors.

I would argue that the culture in the colonies during the 1760s was not different from that in England.  After the war, part of the cost of the war was to be covered by the colonies while the rest was to be covered by the colonial masters. It is practical that the Britain’s had to increases the taxes back home to cover the cost of the war. In addition, the colonies especially in North America rejected the taxation move increasing the burden on the Britain. Slavery and taxation were the main sources of revenue at the time. Though slavery later ended in Britain, it continued in its colonies.
