Review

The eleventh chapter of the book provides an insight into the slave trade business and why there was an increasing need for its trade. It is fascinating to learn that there were auctions done to trade human beings as slaves. The demand for these slaves was due to the growing market for cotton and everyone needed labor for their farms. They would, therefore, buy slaves that would work for free on their farm and make money. The exciting thing is that advertisements were made in newspapers and banks also financed individuals to buy slaves. This goes to show how ancient America had little value of the lives of the blacks that acted as their slaves.

Another interesting part of the novel refers to the issue of duels. In these ancient times, there was a code of honor where men guarded their honor to the point that they could get violent to ensure that their reputation is safeguarded. It is fascinating to learn that men were involved in duels that in some cases resulted in deaths.

Another exciting event in the twelfth chapter of the book is the issue of religion. The reforms that were introduced by these religions were seen as a way of infringing their freedom of drinking by Americans. The religious groups also had their conflicts with the Protestants holding a conflicting view of freedom from those that were held by the Catholics. These differences were however reconciled due to their desire to come up with a moral order and a way of improving personal freedom.
