Rwanda 1994: Akazu “Hutu Power” Genocide of Tutsis

This is a Rwandan genocide that led to the mass slaughter of the minority Tutsi tribe in Rwanda during the country’s civil war that started in 1990. In 1993 there was a ceasefire of the civil war as the roadmap to the implementation of the Arusha declaration that was to enhance inclusivity in the government was set. However, the Hutu and members of the Akazu looked at this as a concession to the enemy demands. This led to the genocide.

This is an exciting topic that one can draw a lot of lessons from. I, therefore, chose this topic to highlight the grievous impacts that tribalism can have on a country. There was mass slaughter of people from the Tutsi tribe, and many of them were displaced from their homes due to this. This needs to be a lesson that should be highlighted so that vices such as tribalism, nepotism, and racism are condemned.

It is also essential that the role played by politicians is pointed out so that the public learn from the mistakes that happened in Rwanda. Politicians are very influential people, and that can be shown by the role they played in the events that led to the Genocide of Tutsi. They influenced the people and created animosity between the two tribes leading to the deaths of millions of people. Therefore, it is important that this story is highlighted so that people learn from it.

This story is also a learning point on the economic impacts of political and tribal instability can have on a nation’s growth. Although Rwanda has grown significantly since the genocide, there is no doubt that the government would have been far off had it not been for the events.
