Technology’s Influence on People’s Lives

There is a constant debate on whether technology has taken over the world concerning its influence on people’s lives. There is no denying that information has become an omnipresent part of human life because it has made everything easy and fast.   Although technology is invented to make things easier, it has altered various aspects of human life such as the ability to do things individually.   Be it using a phone, laptop, computer, and other related devices; technology has worked into the different aspects of people’s lives.  The most affected by technology is the youth given that their daily activities revolve around its use. Young people have become too absorbed in technology alongside the good and bad associated with it.

The most common thing that young adults are related to in terms of information technology is the computer. Smartphone has everything a young person needs, ranging from social media apps, games and learning and information storage applications.  The phone has become the best friend for young people, and they prefer to spend time with it rather than spending time with their friends or peers.  For instance, most young adults cannot last to half an hour without their phones, be it in class, at home or in the workplace.  The high affinity for the phone can be likened to the feeling drug addicts have when they have not used drugs for some time. It seems that the world would be a nightmare to the young adults if, for example, they were denied to use their phones for one day. The phone has proved to be the most dangerous gadget for young people because it makes them alienate themselves from others.

Young people are completely lost without information technology. The dependence is not only limited to the use of mobile phones. Take learning; for example,  students use the various technological resources to research, copy notes, and even do assignments. Notebooks and pens have been gradually replaced by the use of laptops, eBooks, and tablets.  Instead of the learners going to the library to do research, they visit Google, and academic sites such as Google Scholar, Wikipedia among other journal websites to get ready information. Assignments are done by copying ideas from various works on the given topic. Learning has become a less exciting and challenging activity because students can get everything from the internet. In an experiment to determine the effects of using phones on the cognitive development of young people Barr et al.,(2015) found that individuals who used their smartphones more often had little analytical skills. The finding is true because technology does not challenge young people to think about different phenomena; somewhat it helps them get ready information. Technology has thereby resulted in laziness among young people as far as learning is concerned. It has denied the young adults a chance to come up with original ideas, experience the real excitement of learning and dealing with difficult content as this has been replaced by idea collation and paraphrasing.

The young individuals depend on technology to have fun, rather than engaging in fun activities with peers, friends, and family members.  Mobile phones, laptops, computers, and social media have games and other forms of entertainment. With internet connections, the youth can have access to games that do not require them to play with anyone.  What’s more, apps such as youtube, iTunes are used to watch movies and music videos among other content a person can find entertaining. Therefore, technology has done away with young people’s fun experiences. For instance, a few decades back, the young adults would gather to share beautiful moments such as playing, studying together or walking on the streets. However, this has changed, and instead of spending time with friends, the young adults are busy playing games on their gadgets or surfing for all kinds of content on the internet. Using technology to get things done only makes the young people see it as something that is necessary for their lives to be normal.

Rather than promoting communication and cohesion on a personal level, information technology has made young people isolate themselves and prefer loneliness. For instance, a visit o a college computer lab or any other learning institution makes one notice the extent to which technology has spoiled the socialization process. The students can be standing or walking together, but they will be too busy on their phones instead of talking to each other. They prefer to use the phone to communicate with their classmates via, calls, texts, WhatsApp, email, facebook, and twitter rather than one on one interaction. In a typical day, the young people use their technological gadgets more than the time they would spend on doing work, their homework or spending time with actual people. The dependence is not functional, given that there have been cases of mental breakdowns among young people. Technological addiction is a real phenomena, and it will get worse in the next few years.  So far, doctors recommend a technological detox for young individuals to help them develop healthy relationships.

 

Information technology has negative consequences for young adults.  The use of mobile phones influences the development of mental health illnesses among young people such as sleep disturbances, and depression. The availability of the internet makes the use of technological devices easier, and young people have developed unhealthy internet browsing habits. For example, they spend a lot of time on the internet looking at phonographic videos and content instead of sleeping.  The habit inevitably makes them lose a lot of sleep thus interfering with other daily duties. On the same note, the individuals get frustrated when they cannot find the material they are looking for. For instance, most learning institutions have disabled sites they feel are unsuitable for the young learners, but this becomes a problem to those already used to visiting the sites, in most cases pornography.  Such a person may spend a lot of time thinking about how to have access to the site, and this makes them anxious and depressed. So, technology has become harmful particularly to the young people who can not differentiate between the good and bad associated with its use.

Conclusion

Young people can argue against the notion of too much dependency on information technology because it is what makes their communication and learning processes possible.  To some extent, information technology has made the lives of the young people more accessible, but at the same time, it has alienated them from authenticity and the ability to come up with inventions and experiences.
