The Nature and Purpose of Religious Education in Schools

Human beings were created by God and for God and as such their desire for God is inherent in their hearts. Every person lives by the grace of God and by the love of God children, and young people get to encounter God through their parents, through the church in school through religious studies. Schools give children an opportunity to take part in a host of educative and formative educative programs that support their growth in knowledge and to develop a growing understanding of religion and spirituality.

In schools, religious education is an education in the beliefs and practices of an approved religious persuasion by authorized representatives of that persuasion. Generally, religious education is education that concerns itself with ethical decision making, action, and reflection within the school’s system. The curriculum integrates religious education in key learning areas. Even so, the government still has to place regulation on the kind of knowledge that the school gives to its children. This is to ensure that the quality of learning is maintained and that principles of religious living are maintained. Different schools are sponsored by different denominations, but the religious education that a school chooses to teach will be of one general faith. Our school teacher Christian religious education.

The Education Act of 1990 requires that in every government school, time is to be allowed for the religious education of children of any religious persuasion. This consideration is in compliance with international law requirements and guarantees of cultural and religious rights. The state is tasked with ensuring that its citizens have these rights guaranteed. The pronouncements of the Education Act are in consideration of recommendations of the report on religion in education which were adopted by the government of the day as the basis of an agreement with the churches about the implementation of special religious education. It also considers amendments to allow the option of specialized training inethics for parents who do not wish their children to attend special religious education.

The law provides that every parent deserves the right to have their child receive instructions in their religious persuasions. Parents also have the right to decide which religious education their children should be taken through.
