Work/Life Balance

With so much work and personal responsibilities, modern employees have to strike a balance between the two. Organization should support the employees in achieving this balance by using necessary policies. This will not only make the work environment attractive but also increase performance over time.

One policy I can suggest is incorporating a day care center in the work place. It is common for employees to be worried about their small children who were left home with the nanny. Incidences have occurred where the nanny kidnap or kills the child. With the child around, the parent can be able to concentrate with work and check on the child regularly. Another policy I can suggest is flexible scheduling. This policy allows the employees to be away from work any time they need to be and compensate that time at another time. This will ensure that the employees can be able to handle personal mater at any time needed and if possible work from home at night to compensate for that time.

Both of these policies would benefit all employees. At one time or the other, employees will have families and the balance between work and taking care of the family will be necessary. For employees with no families, they have personal matters to handle at times.  The work place culture plays the most important role in ensuring that employees do not take advantage of these policies. A culture of honesty should be cultivated in the organization.  These policies will ensure that the employees are motivated. They will be able to concentrate on their work knowing their families are well taken care off. Employee’s motivation is important in increasing performance in the work place. Such policies will improve performance over time.
