A VISIT TO A MUSEUM

A VISIT TO A MUSEUM

I have always wished to visit a museum because of my desire to learn more about different history and culture, to see world-famous exhibits that I cannot see anywhere else. On 5th May 2018, my desire to visit a museum was fulfilled when I visited the Metropolitan Museum of New York in New York with my cousin. The museum had a unique collection of antiques, armor and ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies and Mughal paintings.  I didn’t know the exact things to expect when I reached the museum since I had never visited any museum before. I didn’t know much about the Metropolitan Museum of New York as well.

My walk started, the museum had six sections, i.e., Art, Archeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology, and Economic Botany. Being a fan of art, I was more interested in the Art section of the Museum. The museum was filled with wonderful arts of the ancient Indians which were made at around 1500s. Some of the arts displayed were life scenes of the Buddha, Bharhut gateway and railings, Buddha offering protection, Prediction of Asita, a coin of Alexander the great, Miracle of Sravasti, the Great Departure, Face of Duga among others.

I have always shown a great interest in Religion and History, and for that reason, I had more interest in knowing more about the art the image of Buddha and coin of the Great Alexandra. The coin of Alexander the Great is dated back in 336-323 BCE.  The coin was made of metal, and it was used as a medium of exchange. The coin was standardized in weight and produced in large scale in order to facilitate trade. The coin of the Alexander the Great was kept in an ancient jar. The image of Buddha offering protection is dated back to 1500-1700 C.E. The image is made of wood. The woods are durable and very difficult to break. A talented artist curved the image. The art was created to represent the founder of the Indian religion, Buddha.

The coin of Alexander the Great has a great relationship with the modern coin. In the ancient days, the Indians used Alexander the Great’ coin as a medium of exchange during trade. In the modern days, money is used as a medium of exchange. Therefore, the coin is relevant in tracing the history of coin to the modern money. On the other hand, the art of the image of Buddha has its relevance to religious studies where we learn the background and history of various religions including the Indian religion.

I considered the visit to the museum to be one of the best encounters in my life experience. Through the visit I was able to know more about the religious background and trade history of the Indians through the study of displayed arts. Each of the art displayed has its significance tracing its history in ancient India. I developed my knowledge of history and also gathered more information that boosted my desire to learn religion of different groups of people across the world. From this, I learnt more about the religion of Indians tracing its roots from the founder, Buddha and also trade starting from the time of Alexander the Great. I would wish to visit the museum again to get more information about other religions in the world.
