America Institute Architects (AIA) Handbook: the Laws of Practice-training and licensure

  1. What is the underlying intent of the architectural license, and how is this intent defined and regulated?

Architects have the responsibility of planning and designing the construction of buildings. They review the plans and designs before the construction is given the go-ahead.The primary purpose of an architectural license is to set the minimum requirements for the architects which assures the public that the person is capable of delivering a high-quality job. The authority makes sure that the license’s contents are simple to understand to make it easy for individuals to meet the requirements (Cornelius 58). They protect the public from fraudsters who may present themselves as architects and construct buildings that may pose a danger to them in the end. The minimum requirements are defined to ensure that only skills and knowledge of architecture are tested and not any other field. Experience, education, and examination play a significant role in determining whether a person will receive this license or not.

  1. Think in terms of the limitations of practice and the protections the license affords those who practice and those affected by architects’ work.

A license gives protection to both the public and the architect.Since it is official permission from the authority, it provides the architects with full ownership of their works so that nobody else can copy or use them elsewhere. In case their plans and designs are used by another person without their knowledge, they can take legal actions against them and get compensated. On the other hand, it also protects the public from incompetent architects. It also allows the authority to take legal measures to the architects when they violate any requirements set in the license (Cornelius 70). The limitations of the permit include high costs for the architects to acquire it.The license may also have too many restrictions making it difficult for the architects to run their business comfortably. Finally, the license holder has to share the profits with the franchise.

  1. What is the intent of the internship or AXP program, and what are the expectations of a person once having completed the crucial tasks?

Internships are essential for the development of skills and experience after finishing one’s education. The primary purpose of these programs is to equip the architect with the knowledge in their specialized fields, have good professional judgments and define as well as review their career goals. Internships expose them to real workplace conditions, which they should be prepared to face throughout their career. After the course, the architects are ready to work as independent professionals and meet the requirements in the licenses. After completing the internship, the expectations are that the students are expected to have acquired the skills and experience that the employers are looking for. They are supposed to use the knowledge gained to be in a position to work under pressure and deliver high-quality results. The networks formed during the internship is vital in acquiring an employment opportunity and seeking professional advice when a need arises.

  1. Alan Lepidus cites the renowned New York Times Architecture Critic Ada Louis Huxtable’s remarks that, ”Everything is rigged to make [an architect] responsible for everyone else’s sins…No one shares his [or her] concern for good design and everything is stacked against it. Based upon the Handbook descriptions of practice, how would you appraise this assessment?

From the remarks made by Critic Ada Louis Huxtable regarding architects, many people fail to appreciate the works of the architects and only focus on the negative side. This may happen whenever the construction of the buildings fails to reflect the initial design; hence the clients become unimpressed consequently unhappy to live in.Criticism is crucial as it helps the architects grow and improve their skills. Many architects are suffering from a lack of confidence when their works are being less appreciated and criticized more. As they need to believe in their abilities, they also require to think that the external world is worthy of their sacrifices. However, it is important to note that through criticism, smart growth and sustainability of the industry is achieved. Modern architecture needs criticism since the buildings constructed are arepresentation of the architect’s works and are built without adequate consultation.
