Environmental degradation and global warming due to my habits

My day to day habits and personal lifestyle choices though harmless at a glance to the environment goes a long way to contribute to environmental degradation and global warming which have far-reaching consequences.

Ranching is part of our family day to day activities. Growing up in a ranch has made me fond of livestock. It requires more resources to rear cattle than other animals such as pigs, goats, and poultry which are a source of meat. Our cattle contribute to deforestation as we cut down trees to increase our acreage of grass and silage for our animals. Expansion of our arable land to grow more feed crops leads to global warming as we reduce forest cover leaving less and fewer trees to absorb emitted carbon dioxide. Cattle are ruminants which mean they produce methane gas which is a greenhouse gas. It has more effect on the environment than carbon dioxide. EIA estimates that the livestock sector is responsible for approximately 37% of human-caused methane emissions and about 65% of human nitrous oxide emissions mainly from manure.

After riding on horseback tendering to livestock, I rush to enjoy my daily treat of beef as it seems I cannot get enough of it. It’s one of my lifestyle habits contributing to greenhouse emission. Sadly despite the delicacy beef consumption is said to be one of the leading contributors to global warming.

Commuting daily using motor vehicles has a hand in degrading the environment. Vehicles emit carbon dioxide among other greenhouse gases. Burning gasoline and diesel have contributed to a rise in global temperatures.  Energy Information Administration estimates that in 2017 in the U.S about 1098 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide. When hooting to others leads to noise pollution and trailblazing turbo exhaust thundering the neighborhood as we cruise along.

A study published in the journal Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Reseach discussed the effect of traffic-related air pollution on asthma and allergies in children living near major roads. The results of the study suggest that exposure to traffic-related air pollution may be associated with increased asthma and reduced lung function in school children.

 

In conclusion, henceforth to take care of my surrounding, I am going to change personal lifestyle choices by embracing a low carbon diet. What would be more fulfilling than planting trees along pavements, in residential neighborhoods which make the place a few degrees cooler compared to particular jungle neighborhoods and along roads? Cycling and embracing car-free nature will restore our mother nature by reducing emissions.
