How to Speak so that People Want to Listen

Sometimes people speak, but very few people actually listen. Julian Treasure presents a presentation on the mistakes that the speaker makes, which prevents people from listening.  He describes seven ways that the speaker can distort and inhibit listening. He also describes four ways that the speaker could employ to ensure that the audience listens. This presentation portrays various elements of the communication process.

The speaker is Julian Treasure, a sound consultant. Through the presentation, Treasure (n.p) delivers the message on how to speak so that people want to listen. His message reflects on the mistakes that people make when speaking, which prevent people from hearing . And the solutions that speakers could employ when talking to make people listen attentively.  The channel, in this case, is an audio-visual presentation. The speaker presents his message through the microphone and the projector or the screen. But to the online viewers and listeners is through the internet platform.

For the presentation, Treasure shares his knowledge in a mass communication setting. Treasure’s message is for the mixed crowd in the conference hall and online viewers. Thus, the audience for the speech includes individuals that attended the conference and those that watch the Ted video through the internet. The audience in the crowd responds to Treasure through acknowledgment, laughter, and attention. Online viewers react to the speaker through comments. Through these responses, the audience provides feedback to the speaker.

The facial expression portrayed by the listeners is clear evidence that they accept the speaker’s message. According to Treasure (n.p), the seven mistakes that people make include gossips, judging, negativity, complaining, excuses, lying, and dogmatism. These are the things that inhibit the effectiveness of a communication process. According to Treasure (n.p), some of the strategies to improve the process include honesty, authenticity, integrity, and love. These elements enable the speaker to capture the audience’s attention.

Treasure delivers a wonderful presentation that leaves the audience wanting to listen more. I want to listen to him again due to his outstanding communication skills. I learned that for effective communication, the listeners must avoid any interference to get the right message. The speaker clearly outlined his purpose by giving the audience the topi that he intends to discuss.

The presentation is a precise combination of the elements of speech. The speaker presents the message in a clear and concise manner. The speaker’s technique allows the audience to provide proper feedback. Treasure actualizes the methods in that he ins message to capture the audience’s attention.
