Obesity and its Management

The prevalence of obesity is on the rise due to increased urbanisation and technological innovations. According to Knapton (2015), there is an increase in obesitycases in the United Kingdom, and the numbers are projected to increase steadily by 2030. In my opinion, obesity is a non-communicable condition in individuals who consume excess calories and lead sedentary lifestyles. This condition is among themajorcauses for chronic illnesses like diabetes type 2.

Interestingly, obesity is a complex condition that is caused by several factors. Initially, I thought that poor dietary practices and lifestyle choices are the leading causes of obesity. However, an individual’s environment significantly influences the chances of excessive weight gain. Research also shows that certain substances, also called endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), alter hormone-regulated metabolic processes that control a person’s body weight (Birchall et al., 2019).

Individuals may inherit genetic traits from their lineage, which predisposes them to obesity. Studies have identified hundreds of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that directly affect anthropometrics. This discovery may facilitate the formulation of new therapeutic and preventive measures for obesity (Birchall et al., 2019). Furthermore, an obesogenic environment amplifies the expression of genetic traits linked to obesity.

Currently, nations are required to add taxes tobeverages such as soda as a way of reducing the prevalence of lifestyle diseases among consumers. In 2018, the UK enforced sugar taxes on drinks to reduce large-scale consumption. The government should continuously educate the general population about the health risks of obesity.Furthermore, the government can fund studies on genetics and its significance in weight management. Moreover, I need to study the role of genetics in obesity and its related conditions. I should also explore the influence of SNPs on the expression of phenotypes in obese individuals.
