Technology Devices Among Young Children

Technology Devices Among Young Children

The recent centuries have been characterized by rapid technological development. The use of internet has increased across the world as a result of the increased development of technological devices such as mobile devices, iPads and computers. Technological devices have further enhanced communication and it has become significantly easier to carry out communication processes even across different geographical locations (Flanagan, 2018). The internet allows people to communicate easily and also to get timely updates on the events that are happening in other parts of the world far from their location. The youths and the young generation have mainly been affected by such technological developments and studies have found that a large number of young people spend most of their time on screens for different reasons. Even though there are many advantages that such young children and people gain from the use of internet and technological devices, it is evident that there are also a bunch of reasons as to why such individuals should only have limited access to the same.

To start with, technology has adversely affected education in a profound way whereby children have turned to be lazier as their reliance on technology has increased tremendously. Education is one of the most important elements and sectors that every person in society should try to improve the quality and effectiveness(Chartrand, 2016). Education has been identified to be among the key factors that have contributed significantly towards the fight against poverty across the globe. As a result, there is great importance to ensuring that the quality of education that the young children get in schools today is promoted and that they get the maximum benefits from such educational services. However, with unlimited access to the internet through technology devices such as smartphones and iPads, children have grown to be lazy since they can access almost everything on the internet. While children used to carry out extensive research projects for assignments that they are given in class, today’s generation relies on the internet where they google everything, thereby limiting their access to a broader collection of ideas and knowledge as contained in books as identified by Flanagan, (2018).

In addition, an increase in the use of technological devices has had a significant impact on health among young children. Health and fitness are essential and critical towards achieving a healthy generation which in turn promotes economic development through increased productivity. In the earlier days, children used to be more active physically when they used to engage in physical games and exercises with other children who played a significant role towards enhancing their physical health(Flanagan, 2018). Playing such physical sports such as football enabled young children to develop stronger bones and healthier systems at large. However, following the increased use of technological dev0ces among young children today, most children spend most of their time behind screens enjoying videos and other forms of entertainment as offered by such devices. In addition, the physical games that children used to engage in have been converted into computer games which in turn have had adverse implications towards physical development among children today(Plowman, 2015). Consequently, the cases of such health and fitness diseases such as obesity have increased significantly, which have in turn affected economic development through limited productivity.

Before the widespread technological devices, most children used to interact well with other people through such activities as playing together during their leisure time. They used to benefit greatly from the informal education which was gained through interaction with older people in different forms of interaction(Plowman, 2015). Such children developed interpersonal skills easily and they could be able to make friends easily. However, with the rise in the use of technological devices for communication purposes, children have lost physical touch with each other and their interpersonal skills have been mainly affected. The consequences are that children born and raised in the current generation are more introverted and they are hard to engage in physical discussions in case there are problems or any issues to be solved. Internet friendships have taken over physical friendships which have, in turn, affected both the lives of such children as well as the general society at large. Following the loss of interpersonal skills among children, today’s generation has lost important values, manners and etiquette.

Moreover, the internet has become a convenient source for immoral and irresponsible content such as pornography as well as other immoral videos and content. While such content teaches children unethical behaviour and character, it also exposes them to the corruption of mind whereby children become nasty and irresponsible over fellow children. Violent content as found on the internet has made children to lose important ethical values such as patience and tolerance. The cases of violent behaviour among school children have risen uncontrollably and the respect that such children hold towards each other has had a great decline (Plowman, 2015). The result is that such devices are contributing largely towards building a society that is full of violence and hatred as well as disrespect which is important in enhancing interpersonal relationships, building as well as sustaining friendships.

Despi6te the fact that there are so many disadvantages that are associated with increased use of technology devices such as smartphones and iPads among young children today, there are also a number of benefits that such children derive from the same devices. Denying such children access to such devices may also result in a number of negative implications which may also affect the larger community. Some of the benefits that children get from the use of technology devices include easy tracking of children which has reduced the number of young children getting lost especially in events that involve greater numbers of people(Plowman, 2015). Parents can easily track the whereabouts of their children who have smartphones and other devices that can access the internet easily using GPS. Moreover, the internet offers great motivation content which has helped to inspire many young people in the current generation since they can be able to identify their role models and learn valuable lessons from them (Chartrand, 2016). Internet and devices also help to keep young children engaged as compared to the earlier days when children engaged with different individuals during their free time and ended up learning negative characteristics and values such as use and abuse of drugs and use of unethical language.

In conclusion, there are many negative implications that technology devices have had among children today. Apart from making them lazier which has, in turn, affected their quality of learning, excessive use of devices has had adverse implications of physical health and fitness among children, thus contributing to increased cases of fitness issues and conditions such as obesity. However, denying the same devices to children would disable their ability to benefit from such elements as motivation and inspiration content found on the internet, and also increase their free time which in turn increases their chances for exposure to bad company.
