Dear Mayor Maloney:

I trust this letter finds you well. My name is XxxxX, a born and raised resident of Alhambra City. My intention for writing this letter is to bring to your attention as the head of this great city, the rising cases of gang-related activities currently witnessed in various neighborhoods within the town.

As an individual who was privileged to grow up in Alhambra, I have witnessed a lot of changes over the years; changes that are both negative and positive. However, in the past two years, I have noticed a worrying trend of gang-related activities that have adversely affected the social structure of our community with the most affected group being the youths.

The emergence of these gangs is associated with increased criminal activities such as theft, burglary, substance abuse, and other social issues like school dropouts. Despite the rise of gang-related activities in Alhambra, addressing the problem remains a challenge due to the secretive nature of these gangs. Around two months ago, I have a conversation with one of the members of Westside Asian Boyz, a street gang group that operates around Monterey Park area. Through our discussion, I came to learn about some of the gang’s operations, which include drug peddling, burglary, and their conflicts with other gangs. Furthermore, I was also made aware of the group’s recruitment process.  Therefore, from the information I have gathered, it is critical for the city council through the office of the mayor to intervene to curb the problem.

I would wish to share details from my findings regarding gangs operating in Alhambra. First, there is an unconfirmed report that six gangs are operating within Alhambra with each group having “control” of a specific area. These gangs include Hell Side, Westside Asian Boyz, 4 Seas, Ken Side Wah Ching, Viet Boyz, and Sonny Side Wah Ching. All the groups target the youths (12-24 years) who are in elementary or high schools. Such involvements have led to an increased number of school dropouts. Secondly, the gang members abuse drugs such as marijuana, heroin, and in extreme cases cocaine. For instance, for one to become a member of Westside Asian Boyz, he or she must be a user of marijuana; the use of cannabis is part of the oath administered to new members. Finally, the members of these gangs depend on burglary and theft to fund their drug addictions since the majority of the members are unemployed and without no stable source of income.

I chose to address the above issue as it is one of the root causes of problems facing the youths in modern societies. Many teenagers have lost their lives through gang-related violence or substance abuse. Therefore, the city council should establish strategies to eliminate the existence of gangs in Alhambra. I would recommend that the mayor creates a task force to carry out further investigations into the matter. Secondly, the city council should engage more with the youths through set programs or meetings aimed at educating them on the benefits of education and ways to avoid joining gangs. Finally, parents should also be trained on how to handle their children on adolescent age group since they are the most vulnerable group to join gangs.

I am looking forward to your response, and it will be my pleasure to assist in any capacity possible to ensure that illegal gangs are eradicated and members of such groups are reformed. In case of any clarifications, kindly contact me through my address.

Sincerely,

Xxxxx Xxxxx
