A Whole New Ballgame

Post-Reading

The author says, in paragraph 8, that he observed that the team had split itself into two groups. There was a group of the players who were hard and aggressive, and then there was a group of the softer and excellent players. They even gave nicknames such as “Basketball Barbie” or a “ball hog.” The aggressive players would play it rough with vicious elbows, while the soft group avoided even breaking a sweat. It was clear that the girls had split into two distinct groups, also though they were in the same team.

The Two Types of People.

In this life, we have different kinds of people, and every person is unique in his or her own way. Categorizing these people into two major groups according to their character, we would come up with two groups. A group that is aggressive and rough; and the other group that is soft. These groups are identifiable upon interacting with them. In the text, for example, we see that these girls split into two groups naturally. The soft girls thought that the aggressive girls were better and the latter saw the former girls as weak. The coach observes that the aggressive ones “cleared out space with vicious elbows” while the timid ones “would avoid any chance of injury or even breaking a sweat.” In conclusion, people are different, and they tend to separate themselves to the people of their kind. It is even said that birds of a feather flock together.

Figurative Language.

Upon reading the text and coming to this sentence where the author describes figuratively how the aggressive and the timid girls played, it created an immediate picture in my mind. I imagined the way the energetic group could play rough, clearing the path using their elbows. I could relate to it as I have watched quite a few basketball matches and I know how aggressive the game can be. Then, I could picture another group, entirely different from the first. These girls played softly and avoided hurting anyone like they had no passion for the game. The opponents could snatch the ball each time because they would fear an aggressive game that could cause an injury.

Concluding Analysis

The author concludes by appreciating the far they had come and the improvement they had achieved from their last match with the opponent. He deduces the positives that his girls had from that game even though they lost. He also tells that even the girls who were timid earlier had learned to play aggressively, and others to trust the teammates. He concludes by stating the lesson he learned “New depths to the same game I’ve always loved.” Throughout the article, I have discovered that girls are different from boys. Boys pretend to know it all, and they hardly apologize and get friendly with their superiors, which is quite the opposite when it comes to girls. Coaching girls are entirely different than coaching boys.

Pre-Writing

I have had different class experiences. Some classes were challenging while in others I just felt relaxed and could remember almost everything after the class. There was this class experience that had a lot of humor in it; everyone laughed until the ribs hurt, and some more. After the class, even to this day, the jokes are still fresh in my head, and I vividly recall the lecture and the information that we learned. This experience taught me that I could learn best in a funny class.

The similarities between my best and the worst class are that in both, we took down notes, the assignment was given after the lecture, they both took less than an hour, I learned new things, and there was a discussion after the class on the subject learned. The differences between my best and my worst class are; in my best class, everyone was lively and seemed to enjoy, while in my worst class, very few paid attention. In my best class, almost everyone wrote down the notes, while in the worst class, numerous students just stared blankly. In my best class, all students paid close attention, while in the worst class, a lot of the students were sleeping.
