Ames, Grube and Moore conducted a study about the relationship of social control mechanism at work to drinking practices for employees that work in the same industry. It is worth noting that the different employees from the industry work from different work environments. The authors try to explore the difference between employees working under a traditional U.S management and another from non traditional Japanese transparent model. The research process involved a survey from 1378 employees who were expected to answer questions related to work drinking. The research also wanted to explore the perceptions of drinking norms, alcohol related policies and the different policies employed by the different working environment.

From the survey, it is evident that the level of alcohol consumption in the two set ups is almost similar. However, it is worth noting that there are some differences existing among the work related drinking. From the results of the research, it is clear that the U.S traditional model was related to more permissive norms about drinking either before or after work. In addition, higher work drinking rates were also evident in the Japanese nontraditional model. Nevertheless, the research fails to account the economic impact of work drinking in the different models. The research also fails to account for the possible indicators of alcoholism in work place and how the vice can be dealt with. However, their work provides essential information for the comparison of the drinking pattern between the two works set up. The work also give an critical analysis of the impact of social norms in a work set up which fulfills the intention of the research process.
