The interviewee lives with his Dad who has twin sisters Beth and Diana. Both Diana and Beth has special needs. The interviewee has a son called Steven as well as an elder daughter. He is in his first grade at Olivewood Elementary school. Steven likes math and reading. He has little temper and hates being ordered around. He likes being in charge. The interviewee husband is a math and science teacher, caring, supportive, and always up to family roles and responsibilities. She dislikes feeding kids.

The interviewee usually wakes up at around 4.30m in the morning for his daily chores. He wakes up his son at around 6.30 am to do his homework. Steven has Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and is on ADHD medication. The interviewee always ensures that she meets the special needs of her son.  The interviewer learned of her son’s special needs at the age of three when he joined Preschool, at LaTiearra. They realized that the child was special. They noticed their child inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity that is Steven was having difficulty in paying attention at school and forgetfulness and from then henceforth, they have tried to find creative solutions as well as capitalize on his strengths.

Steven’s parents felt scared and worried when they learned about the son’s conditions and this affected them much. It took them time to accept reality and move on. Even though Steven’s father is against medications, but they have come to appreciate that with medication the child is just as normal as other kids are. Steven’s cousin also has ADHD and is hyperactive, and this experience seems to influence how Steven’s deal with this situation. The mother is more concern about the welfare of her family and is always to the task.

Steven’s parents have normalized and now live comfortably with him. They have learned to handle their son as well as other cousins they are staying with. Steven’s condition has improved greatly, and he now usually lives just like other children even though there are still some things that he fails to do such as telling his parents about his day. However, he is now frequently interacting with his peers and participating actively in play with other kids.

Steven’s mother appreciates the support and corporation they usually receive from their extended families in their dealings with the son and other two cousins who have special needs. She appreciates and recognizes her husband immense and unrelenting support towards dealing with the situations. They both do work together and exchange responsibilities in taking care of Steven and the two cousins with special needs.

Steven’s mother also gets massive support from friends and well-wishers. She has a Facebook page purposely created for special needs children where people from all corners of the world with similar conditions can come together to share their experience and offer sound advice to one another.  She has also joined a community group known as SEAC, which is for special needs kids. The group holds a monthly meeting where they usually invite various professionals such as psychologists to offer parents of children with special needs advice and ways of how to raise such children.  The group is quite motivational, and they usually benefit from it a lot. In these meetings, they also share their experience, support those with worse cases, and help them to find a long lasting solution.

Steven’s mother notes that their strength has been working together as a family and being supportive of one another. She appreciates the fact all these are possible due to the great love they have for one another and having a caring and supportive family. Steve is no longer a problem as he now plays an active role in helping other younger kids.

In relation to her experiences with Steven’s educational systems, Steven’s mother describes the relationship as exceptional and amazing. She recognizes that Steve’s teacher has been exceptionally good and supportive.  They always help Steve to live with and improve his condition. Steve is an extra-ordinary ADHD kid. He is a go-getter with much enthusiasm to learn and quite inquisitive. He is not affected much by his condition. The parents tried to skip his medications to find out if he needed more medication or can survive with little education. Steven’s mother states that her worst moment was when she learned that her child had some problems.

When she was informed by Teachers at his first preschool that he was unable to do some simple tasks such as wiping himself, going to the bathroom by himself and inattentive.  The mother has well contented with the kind of education her son is currently receiving and don’t consider changing anything. She describes education as perfect for her child wellbeing and future life.  The interviewee hopes that her son will succeed in life and that his condition will not adversely affect him in any way.  He hopes her son to grow as an average person and live to achieve his career dream. The biggest fear cited by Steven’s mother is the possible discrimination and ridicule by his peers upon learning of his condition.  When kids make fun of Steven’s condition, it may lower his self-esteem.

Lastly, she advises and requests educators and teachers always to be honest with parents about the children especially those with special needs. Immediately a child joins a pre-school and the teachers there notice something unusual about that kid, they should share it with the parents immediately to allow a prompt action to be taken to help the child. Delay in reporting such matter might detrimental to both the kid and the parents.  She is bitter that the teacher of Steven at her first pre-school failed to inform them of their child condition and this did go well with them.
