A&P of the Nervous Systems

Cranial nerves are the pairs of nerves that connect different parts of the body to the brain; the nerve pairs are twelve in number. The primary function of the nerves includes sensory which include smell, touch, and hearing. The nerves are in different parts of the body, and they send a signal to the brain for interpretation so that the brain can take the appropriate action. The different types of nerves serve different functions; therefore, the nerves have different specific roles that they play. Among the twelve nerves include the optic nerve. The nerve connects the brain that is responsible for vision. The nerve is unique and ensures that there is communication between the brain and the eye.

The nerve originates from the retina in the eye to the brain and is responsible for conducting visual stimuli from the eye to the brain. The stimuli from the brain are received as by the photoreceptors in the brain for it to interpret the stimuli. The optic nerve comprises of ganglionic cells that send the signals from the eye to the brain. The structure of the optic nerve include the bipolar and ganglion cells that interconnect each other from the retina of the eye to the brain. The cells are arranged in layers of meninges and run from the eye to the brain.

The disorder that affects the optic nerve include the neuritis; neuritis is the inflammation of the optic nerve; it is usually affected by the infection of the immune system. The nerves in the eye swell as a result of the infection. When the nerve has damaged the disorder that will be formed is the blindness disorder. The patient will not be able to see since the nerve sends signals to the brain for interpretation.
