Apple Inc

Multinational corporations (MNCs) are for profit organizations present in more than one state. The presence could be offices, plants, factories, distribution centers, or subsidiaries. Apple Inc is a MNC based in California. It has stores in more than 18 countries all over the world. In addition, the company’s products can be accessed from the online retail stores from anywhere in the world It designs, develops and sells computer software and consumer electronics. Hard ware products include phones, computers, tablets, and televisions. Consumer software includes macOS and iOS operating systems. It also offers online services such as the iOS App Store, iTunes Store, iCloud, and Mac App Store. By revenue, Apple Inc is the world largest technology company.

Apple Inc is considered a good citizen for several reasons. One of the reasons is that it supports local communities where it operates. Through the global volunteer program, Apple Inc employees are encouraged to volunteer in the local communities. Different programs are rolled out for employees to volunteer. Apple Inc is also very environment friendly. First, it has reduced the power consumption of its products by 57%, which exceeds energy star guidelines (Dudovskiy, 2016). According to Greenpeace’s Clicking Clean Report, Apple Inc is the only company that has been awarded a clean energy index of 100%. By the year 2014, the company’s operations in the U.S. were powered by renewable energy (Dudovskiy, 2016). Another thing about the company is that it empowers the employees through education. The apple education and development program, is offered free of charge in many of its factories and many employees have benefited from it.

However, there are other reasons why Apple Inc can be considered a bad citizen. First, the company has employed under age employees at some of its facilities. This is against the international laws of labor. In addition, the company has been accused severally of poor working conditions especially in china (Klein, 2011). Safety measures are not put into place and workers sleep in overcrowded factories. Another thing is the falsification of audit materials, which is against the international accounting standards.

In the international system, the company is considered very innovative and is interested in changing the society’s mindset. It is always committed to solving consumers’ technological problems through innovation.

Response to Ryan Barbolt

Hi Ryan, great analysis over there, I agree with you that a MNC is a corporation that operates in more than one country and often such corporate are global. The British Petroleum Company, which is based in the London, is a good example of a MNC. Recently, the company has been facing a lot of criticism based on its unethical behaviors. A good example is the oil spill in Mexico as you have indicated. In addition, according to Guardian, British Petroleum Company increased CO2 emissions by 6%, water consumption by 5% and waste in host countries by 12% in the year 2009 alone. The oil spills in Mexico made many employees temporarily unemployed. It also destroyed the name of the company. a socially responsible organization is mindful of the communities around them and British Petroleum Company has not been very keen in this issue over the past many years.

Response to Brian Sands

Hi Brian, nice work over there, COSTCO is a good example of a corporation that operates in more than one state. COSTCO can be considered a good citizen for its prioritization on the employees as stakeholders. The company recognizes that employees’ are important because they influence performance. Employees have health benefits and several types of insurances including long term care insurance. I agree with you that the company not only provide benefits directly to their employees, but also offer coverage for families and assist with pre-tax deductions to save employee money. Additionally, benefits are not restricted just too full-time employees, but even part time hourly employees can take advantage of their extensive offers. Another significant thing about the company is that it supports households and community development. Costco’s Charitable Contributions Committee addresses the community development issues together with environmental protection. However, the company has ethical issues such as selling unhealthy eggs and causing traffic in different communities.
