Asylum seekers

Asylum seekers are persons who have fled their home country and settled in another country to seek refuge. Asylum provides international protection to migrants in the country they seek homage. The asylum seekers in the USA make formal application to the US government for the right to live in the US, and if the application is accepted, they assume the title ofan asylee. Different leaders in the US had their approach towards asylum applicants. For instance, the Trump administration can be described as being harsh on asylum applicants as compared to the Obama administration. More recently, Trump signed an executive order that enables him to apply wide-scale detention of immigrant families until their cases are concluded and they are deported back to their countries.

Comparing Obama’s and Trump’s approach to immigration is based on the deportation of asylum seekers. During Trump’s administration, more immigrants have been deported as compared to Obama’s administration. Obama exported about 2 million over the eight years of his administration which is believed to be the highest record ever. Trump’s administration emphasizes on zero-tolerance policy on asylum seekers that has led to the separation of families. Moreover, the Trump administration has proposed to start detaining immigrant’s families for weeks or even months.

Both the two presidents have a record of prosecuting asylum seekers; however, Trump’s zero tolerance on asylum seekers has resulted in family separation.Trump has now adopted the separation of families a standard strategy to reduce the number of people illegally crossing into the US, a plan that was no applied by Obama. Family separation has become more common for instance in 2017 a high number of families were separated while an estimated 700 families were separated between 2017 and 2018.

In the case of minors, who crossed into the US unaccompanied, both administrations provided temporary homage. However, this approach was underfunded leading into the mishandling of the children. Obama preferred detaining families together during his response to the 2014 border crisis; however, the court overruled this action resulting in family separation. Trump’s administration is seeking to acquire legal authority to set up temporary shelters at military bases for families seeking asylum while trying to advise the Congress to undo the Flores settlement in a bid to detain families unseparated.
