Attributes of Groups and High Performance Teams

A high-performance team is a group of individuals who are interdependent and work together to achieve a common goal (Kinicki, Williams, Scott-Ladd, & Perry, 2014). Groups and high-performance teams have a certain characteristic that bond and make them function successfully. The following are the eight attributes that will contribute to the successfulness and function of groups and high-performance teams. First, the groups and high-performance teams should have participative leadership. The group should know that no one on the team is important than the rest. The attribute creates a sense of interdependent among the groups and encourages them to serve one another. Similarly, the attribute empowers and free up the team members. Therefore, the presence of a team leader is vital to the function and successfulness of the team.

Second is the attribute of shared responsibility. The team members should know that their roles have the same value and importance as those of their leaders. Moreover, members should assume other roles and feel responsible for the success of the team. Also, they should demonstrate respect to one another by listening to the views of their colleagues and praise their efforts. Third, groups and high-performance teams should have clear goals and expectations. They should understand why they are together and what they need to achieve at the end of the day. Precisely, the team members should know their responsibilities in achieving the objectives (Wheelan, 2014). Therefore, when multiple people have clear goals and work towards it, they will achieve their goal. The team should also monitor the progress towards goals to ensure that every element follows the timeline.

The fourth is the attribute of effective communication. It is important for the teams to have a clear and concise oral and written communication. Similarly, they should have regular discussions or meetings so that members get updates on the progress of the team. Each team member should also feel comfortable to express creative ideas and speak their mind. Therefore, effective communication will minimize mistakes and allow team members understand their responsibilities. Fifth, the groups and high-performance teams should focus on the future. The team should see change as an opportunity for them to grow and expand. Therefore, a high-performance team is never threatened by change and growth, and this attitude will propel the team to success.

The Sixth characteristic is to focus on the task at hand. The project that the team is handling will be successful if the members focus and contribute their ideas towards it. Therefore, the teams should ensure that the meetings and organizations focus on the results. Seventh, the groups should maximize the creative talents of its members. The team leaders should remove the potential barriers that might hinder the individual talents (Kinicki, Williams, Scott-Ladd, & Perry, 2014). Also, the teams will succeed when the skills and talents of individual members are encouraged and used to achieve the goals. Ultimately, high-performance teams and groups should practice rapid response. The teams will function well and prosper if an opportunity is identified and acted upon quickly.

Diversity makes an effective team. Therefore, when we have diverse team members in a criminal justice agency, the wide range of skills and experience will provide support and guidance to the team. Similarly, diversity allows members to complement one another since they have varied strength and weaknesses, discipline, creativity, and personalities (Wheelan, 2014). The significance of having diverse teams is to show respect and also embrace the opinions of different members.
