The two different types of counseling that are important for the discussion comprises of Behavioral therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which is selected based upon their benefits and limitations.

Behavioral therapy and benefits

Behavioral Therapy is a particular therapy based on the theory that an individual can “unlearn” learned behavior or transform the behavior without considering the original behavior. Most people with obsessive disorders, fear and addictions can benefit from the therapy.  Behavioral therapy can appropriately deal with frustration and stress. Behavioral therapy initiates positive reactions to life and avoids becoming inactive (Johnstone, Donaghy & Martin, 2002). Behavioral therapy is limited to children since they are the one who is still in the stage of development and regulation of behavior is still important. Behavior therapy does not give diligent attention to the emotions of the client and hence does not explore how feelings can affect therapy practice.

Cognitive-behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is recognized as a therapy of choice for the symptoms of depression and anxiety. The treatment can change distressing behavior promptly by challenging adverse thoughts and beliefs. The client is taught how to apply coping strategies in the future.  The treatment has a limitation in the manner in which it does not strive to examine the original causes or the hidden potentials of the client (Grant & Haverkamp, 1995). CBT can be applied in cases where medication for the treatment of mental health disorders has failed. The therapy can be completed within a short time as compared to other forms of therapy. CBT requires maximum commitment since the role that a therapist plays is not to take your problems away but give advice. The structuring of the CBT cannot allow its application to those with complicated health needs or learning challenges.
