Child Abuse and Dysfunctional Romantic Relationships

Child Abuse and Dysfunctional Romantic Relationships

The family is considered to be the most crucial social institution, as it is the basic unit of society.  Primary socialization, which involves teaching children the values suitable to persons as members of a specific culture is a crucial aspect of family. Parents, as the agents of primary socialization, play a significant role in molding their children into useful members of society. As role models, parents should exhibit good morals that can be emulated by their young ones. Children learn more about seeing rather than being told. Therefore, the importance of the issue about child abuse or harsh child discipline and how it negatively affects the future intimate relationships is pivotal for study. Researchers should invest more on this research as it is the backbone of humanity in the sense that if solutions are not provided, the society will produce dysfunctional families and consequently, there shall be no competent human resource in various fields of the economy.

After reading the articles, a couple of questions arise. First, are there other more recent researches done on the issue?  The studies presented were conducted many years ago, and there is a high likelihood that a lot has changed in society concerning aspects such methods of parenting. Second, how reliable are the methods used to collect data? Are the samples chosen to represent general society in its complexity? Third, are there any peculiarities in the findings? What percentage shows children who were abused but have good romantic relationships in their adulthood? One of the ideas that I propose to be investigated soon concerns same-sex parenthood and how different the future intimate relationships of children brought up in dysfunctional homosexual marriages differ from that of their straight parenthood families. Additionally, I would like an investigation to be done on the difference between white parenting and black parenting, and which race produces more dysfunctional intimate relationships based on poor parenthood and child abuse.
