Community Teaching Experience

Part 1

The proposed community teaching when approved will be facilitated with the help of PowerPoint presentation. This option of information delivery is considered by many as the best option for reaching out to the largest number of learners &##7. Considering that it is targeted that the teaching will involve many people of different ages and status, the PowerPoint presentation will be a nice professional way to present the subject matter of the teaching process. Besides, the PowerPoint will help the facilitator to keep organized with his thoughts and ideas all along. This way, the facilitator will not be rambling on too much past the scheduled time.  In another dimension, it has been noted that PowerPoint presentation offers diversification in teaching style. In this sense, the facilitator will be able to command, persuade and inform learners with auditory as well as visual aspects. This way, the learners will be able to understand the subject matter of the teaching comprehensively. Besides, it will help to keep the focus of the learners you.

The PowerPoint will be developed with slides containing clear and straightforward words, phrases and sentences. Images and photos will be used to make illustrations and help the learners comprehend the essential points of the presentation. The first slides of the PowerPoint presentation will be used to introduce childhood obesity and provide varied definitions of childhood obesity. The other subsequent slides of the PowerPoint presentation will include the causes, the effects and the different intervention measures that could be used in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.

The teaching will be conducted in a community health center. The reason for choosing this setting is because, in a community health center, there is a constant flow of people. The will enable the facilitator to have had the number of the audience interested in learning new information and skills concerning childhood obesity. A community health center is established to accommodate different people regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicities or social status. Since the community health centers are designed in a way they encourage people to seek health services voluntarily, the facilitator will benefit from this aspect.

Summary

After assessing the current health status of the community, it was evident that the issue of childhood obesity is becoming a health concern. The community teaching plan, therefore, was developed to educate the community on the best intervention practices for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.  The community teaching plan involved equipping the community with the best ways through which childhood obesity can be prevented and managed on an individual, family, and community level. Providing the community with information and a workable approach is a noble course that will help individual and family members with adolescents suffering from childhood obesity to figure out what needs to be done in the management and prevention of obesity. Through depending on the understanding of childhood obesity and the available intervention measures that can be used in the treatment, the members of the community will no longer have worries concerning this epidemic.

To help in teaching the community on intervention measures for childhood obesity, power point presentation was chosen as the best delivery option. A PPT presentation was then developed using Microsoft Office PowerPoint Presentation. The presentation encompassed aspects of obesity as a health condition. The first PowerPoint slide was used to introduce obesity by giving the definitions and a brief background. The subsequent slides touch on the causes, effects and the effects of obesity on human lives. Before conducting the actual presentation in the Community Hall, the community teaching work plan proposal was filled. This plan was then reviewed by the County Deputy Health Officer for approval.

In a nutshell, the presentation identifies the need for addressing childhood obesity in the individual, family, and community level. To deliver the message in a clear and concise manner, the presentation touched on creativity while at the same time ensuring for the evaluation for objectives.

Epidemiological Rationale

Due to the changes in lifestyle, people and in particular young people have changed their mode of feeding and nutritional strategies. Consequently, the changed lifestyle has resulted in the number of adolescents considered obese to increase. The number of adolescents considered obese in the country is frightening which made the issue to out as one of the country’s most significant concern. Studies show that 16.9 percent of adolescents in the United States are obese. Obesity is a progressive condition, and therefore an obese teenager will become obese even when they become adults. Obesity and the rate with which it is accelerating in this current generation is more of a social problem rather than a personal issue. With the numbers of obese adolescents at high and being projected to rise in the coming years, treatment interventions are being sought.

The above statistics show the urgency that is required to handle childhood obesity before it escalates further. Treatment and prevention of childhood obesity require joint efforts from all the concerned stakeholders. In this regard is it was seen imperative to equip the community with relevant information on how to handle and manage obesity in the region. Managing and preventing obesity is essential as it assists in eliminating the risks of psychological problems such as low self-esteem, stress, and depression. It also helps to reduce or eliminate the risks of diseases such as diabetes, stroke, and hypertension among others.

The treatment for obesity mainly focuses on intervention practices aimed at preventing and managing obesity. On the one hand, therapy is one of the commonly used prevention strategies for obesity. However, most of the therapy efforts are focused on the patient and the immediate family. These efforts are all aimed at providing ways through which a behavioral change can be established. These efforts, however, seem inadequate since they lack to understand that the teenager’s behavior is a product of family and the community. An intervention that focuses on not only the family, but at the community at large would seem adequate in the prevention of obesity (Hills, Dengel, & Lubans, 2015). In this regard, a community-based program like a health education program would be more effective in preventing obesity in the current generation and future generations.

Evaluation of Teaching Experience

Ideally, the teaching experience was wholesome and worthwhile. The PowerPoint presentation spiced things up in the sense that it was created using create and straightforward terms and eye-catching graphics. This aspect was of great significance in helping the learners to comprehend the subject matter of the presentation. From the feedback obtained from the return demonstrations, it was evident that the learners had obtained substantial knowledge about intervention measures for treatment and prevention of childhood obesity. Furthermore, the return demonstrations proved that the learner’s eagerness to know more on the specific practices they can undertake at an individual level as well as at community level to manage and control childhood obesity in the region. In another dimension, it is worth noting that the learners were engaged in open-ended general as well as specific questions about their understanding of childhood obesity. The interaction ensured that the teaching experience was a two-sided affair where the learners and the facilitator in one way or the other were mutually benefiting.  This interaction proved critical in the sense that the misconception that many of the learners had concerning childhood obesity were cleared.

The teaching experience was not only fascinating but also an opener in the sense that it created a sense of responsibility and awareness. This is true especially when talking about childhood obesity to adolescents. Another important eye-opening insight obtained from the teaching experience is that educational programs based on educating the community are both beneficial and challenging at the same time. On one side it turned out that as the facilitator obtained a lot of insights about how the community understanding of childhood obesity. On the other side, it turned out that the level of interest in learning about childhood obesity is left for those affected by the disease. Overall, the teaching experience can be termed as a success. The desire to learn and acquire a new set of knowledge and share it with other members was tge most exciting part of the community teaching experience.

Community Response to Teaching

In essence, the learners seemed to like the whole idea of the teaching. The community response which was evident in the way they promised to embrace the Intervention measures provided in the presentation can be termed as excellent. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that learning is one thing and putting the knowledge and skills learned in practice is another thing. However, from the feedback obtained, it can be said that the learners are much interested in putting the skills and knowledge obtained from the teaching into practice. Majority of the learners after the discussion were thankful for the knowledge shared and promised to try out the measures at a personal level and the family level. Although the discussion focused on interventions on personal, family, and community level, it was not clear that the learners were willing to engage the intervention measures at the community level.

A follow up will be carried in a few months, in one way all the other it can be said that the learners were satisfied with the whole process. This draws support from the insight obtained from the teaching evaluation sheets. Through these sheets, the learners voiced their satisfaction with the teaching and agreed in unison that the whole experience was an eye-opener. The majority was excited about how the PowerPoint presentation was conducted. Through the evaluation sheets, the learners noted that the PowerPoint presentation was helpful and easy to follow and comprehend. Regarding how the facilitator conducted himself during the discussion, the learners acknowledged the fact that the facilitator was eloquent, clear and precise while conducting his explanations and illustrations concerning childhood obesity. To voice their satisfaction with the teaching, the learners for extra teaching sessions on the issue and other health conditions affecting the community.

Areas of Strengths and Areas of Improvement

The first things that made this community teaching success were cooperation with the members and the facilitator’s reach experience in the field of community health. The cooperation accorded by the learners to the facilitator ensured a smooth process. Their willingness to learn was also a plus. Other than been well conversant with the topic, the facilitator was eloquent and charismatic. In another dimension, using several teaching styles can be termed as strength. The facilitator was able to use a blend of auditory and visual aspects in the most effective way. This ensured that learners were able to grasp everything that was mentioned in the discussion. The use of the PowerPoint presentation as a delivery option also played a significant role in the whole process. By the fact that the words, phrases, and sentences used in the presentation were clear and straightforward, the learners were able to comprehend all the information quickly. Besides, eye-catching graphics made the presentation exciting and visible at a distance.

In the case of another community teaching in the future, some areas need improvement. One such area is time management. The teaching did not finish at the set time. Time will need to be properly managed to work within limits. Although engaging the learners with questions is essential, it will need to be minimized in the next teaching. The other undoing was room space. The room seemed congested. During the next teaching, a more spacious room that will accommodate a more significant number will be used.
