Cuba between Social Equality

Cuba between Social Equality

With the downfall of the Soviet Block, the government of Cuba enacted social and economic reforms. These reforms are causing hardships to the people of Cuba. The self-sacrifice for the good of the community as dictated by the government is not only causing hardships to the people but people are starting to embrace capitalism.  The mingle wages given by the government to the people is not enough to maintain them. The people are turning to other sources of money such as prostitution and crime.

In my view, capitalism will win. For a start, the Cuban government had dollarized the economy. In addition, foreigners such as the Chinese and Italians have been able to acquire beaches all over Cuba. The economy depends mostly on tourism as a source of foreign revenue. The country is experiencing many radical social changes recently.  These include the increasing reliance on tourism and the decrease in the social safety net programs.

Between the years 1989 and 1993, the gross domestic product (GDP) reduced by 35%.  The per capita income fell from $334 to a low of $99 (Haddad, 2003). This is a clear indication of a decreasing economy. Socialism in itself is very demotivating to the hardworking citizen. At the end of the day, everybody get the same service no matter the effort.  Capitalism on the other hand is very rewarding.

With the decrease in social welfare and increased hard currency revenues with the aim of curbing inflation, the citizens of Cuba are starting o question the role of the government providing and protecting them (Haddad, 2003). People have turned to self-employment though highly regulated and taxed for survival. In my view, the root capitalism has gained in Cuba is just the first step. In time, the country will have to give in to capitalism for survival.
