Cultural Diversity in the Workplace

Workplaces comprise of many people from different communities that bring cultural diversity, people have grown in different backgrounds. One adapts a culture of the people that raise him or her. There is a cultural difference between different communities, and different communities have different ways of life therefore when one works with people from a diverse community they are likely to face culture shock. Cultural diversity in the workplace brings a perspective in terms of ideas that could not be developed if the employees were from some community with the same culture. The health sector is among the sectors that have the advantage of cultural diversity among the employees. The nurses come from different cultures with the objective of serving the people.

Companies are encouraged to hire employees from a different cultural background to bring cultural diversity to the workplace. Health care providers work in different parts of the work hence they bring their different cultures. The first thing that they face is culture shock where they are surprised about the culture of their colleagues (Epstein, & Turner, 2015). The culture shock tends to reduce as they get used to each other. Globalization has contributed to a culture where people from different parts of the world are allowed to live and work in any city or part in the world that they are willing to migrate to. The movement of the people enables them to find opportunities to new areas that they have moved to.

Different theories explain cultural differences in the workplace and the cultural shock that they go through when they find their way of life is unique. Various theories explain cultural diversity in the workplace, the theories include the transcultural nursing theory that encourages employers to employ employees from different backgrounds and culture (Giger, 2016). The theory argues that if the employees are drawn from different cultural backgrounds they bring different working values, therefore, the workplace will be productive with employees that are able to have a different perspective to ideas or challenges that they face.

The nursing profession requires nurses to have different skills and perspectives in terms of how they can solve the challenges facing patients. Nurses from different cultural backgrounds can learn from each other and get ideas that they use to deal with particular challenges facing them (Epstein, & Turner, 2015). Some issues practiced culturally are needed to treat the patients when the drugs are not responding. The values from different cultures bring an amount that cannot be found in the employees were working from the community. People from different cultures have different values, beliefs and behaviors, therefore, they will be able to treat the patients in a manner that is understandable to them. The nurses will be able to design solutions to their patients depending on the needs of the patients.

Patients require an understanding by the nurses in order for one to be able to know the challenges that they are going through. Without understanding the problems that the patients are going through one is not able to plan on how to treat the diseases that the patients are going through (Epstein, & Turner, 2015). Patients cannot be treated before the cause of the disease is identified. Health and treatment of the patients are inseparable therefore allowing different people from different cultural backgrounds will improve the quality of care services that they provide to their patients.

When the nurses come from a different cultural background, it promotes innovation because the employees will bring different ideas that can be joined to come up with a plan that never existed before. Also, they will have different levels of skills and expertise hence the patients will receive the best services from the nurses. The possibility of the patients healing the disease that they are suffering from due to in-depth knowledge on how to handle different diseases that the patients are suffering from.

The employees also get to understand and learn from their colleagues that come from different culture. Learning other people culture is crucial because one get to understand their culture and way of life, this is important in promoting peaceful co-existence among different communities (Ayong,& Atanga, 2017). The world faces the challenge of conflicts between different societies and countries, therefore, any opportunity that I meant to promote peaceful co-existence among people with different backgrounds.  Work diversity should be encouraged to promote understanding among people. The best way to encourage diversity is to come up with a policy requiring organizations to help variety while they are hiring new employees. Respect develop between different communities hence people will respect the culture of other people because they know how the culture is vital to the societies.

In conclusion, nurses face different challenges in terms of relationships among themselves and stakeholders, embracing others culture is a sign of respect to the person. The nursing job is about how one relates to the patients and therefore the more diverse the nurses, the more they will be able to address concerns of their patients. The diversity of nurses’ help in understanding the different needs of the patients and coming up with ways to solve the challenges experienced.
