Dealing with Chronic Diseases as a Nurse

In the world today, there has been an increase in the number and prevalence of chronic diseases. This can be attributed to the changes in lifestyles and technology in the past few decades. A chronic illness can be described as a human health condition which is persistent and has long-lasting effects on an individual. Also, such type of illnesses can come with time. It means that those who develop these diseases have to live with it and adjust to their demand. In such cases, management of the illness is essential, both to the patient and to the family. One of the most common chronic diseases is diabetes. This refers to the condition that occurs when the body either produces inadequate insulin or when there is resistance to insulin. This inhibits the regulation of the amount of sugar in the blood. The prevalence of diabetes in the world has significantly increased in the last few years. Therefore, in this essay, I will discuss how I will promote the health of a patient who has type 2 diabetes.

As a nurse, I will apply various techniques in an attempt to promote the health of the patient and the family dealing with the condition. I will work closely with the people who are directly or indirectly affected by the disease. In this case, I will use three ways to promote the health of the patient and his family. I will start by building trust with them. By so doing, I will establish a strong relationship with the patient and the family. This is an essential step because the management of diabetes mostly depends on behavioral interventions. As such, trust can make the patient reveal important information regarding his daily life activities, struggles, and achievements. With this, the patient and the family will provide me with the necessary information on what is going on with my client’s life. As such, I will be able to know the type of interventions that I will recommend. In addition to this, trust will help me to collaborate with the patient and the family. I will help them to develop positive coping skills. Through this, they will accept the situation and direct their efforts towards managing the condition. Such positivity will be critical in promoting the health of the patient.

Secondly, I will promote the health of the patient by encouraging him to engage in physical activities. Lack of exercise is one of the leading causes of the disease. Therefore, I will focus on reversing abnormal metabolic functions. Participating in physical activities will help in improving the body’s sensitivity to insulin. Through this, it makes it possible to manage the level of sugar in the blood. With this, it will prevent or delay the disease from developing. During physical activities, the active muscles use sugar in the body as a source of energy. By doing so, the amount of sugar in the blood will be kept at manageable levels, thus, improving the health of the client. As such, I will ensure that the client engages in simple physical activities such as walking, cleaning, jogging, biking, and much more. For example, I will tell the patient to walk for 30 minutes every morning. This will help in burning calories in the body, and thus, will manage the disease. However, before he begins exercising, I will have to assess his heart health to determine the type of activities that will benefit him. After this, he will be able to set realistic goals and work towards them.

The third way through which I will improve the health of the patient will be through therapeutic education. This will involve teaching the patient and his family about the condition and how they need to adapt to it. The main aim of such education programs is to assist the patient to participate in the treatment process and avoid unnecessary complications actively. Therapeutic education is one of the main pillars of the treatment and management of diabetes. As such, I will teach the patient, his family, and friends about how they can help in managing the condition. The therapeutic education will cover each stage of clinical care so that both the family and the healthcare team can be able to assess the processes and their outcomes. This program will also help in improving the health literacy of the patient and his family. For example, I will teach them about the type of food to take and how to cook it, the importance of exercise, and so on. All these will help in improving the health of the patient.

In conclusion, Type 2 diabetes has been one of the common chronic diseases in the world. It is a deadly disease which needs to be managed appropriately. Therefore, as a nurse, I will ensure that I help my client in various ways. The first one is through building trust with the patient and his family so that they can feel free and give me the information that is necessary. This will help me understand more about the patient’s needs. Secondly, I will encourage the patient to engage in physical activities which will help in burning calories. Lastly, I will offer therapeutic education to help the client and his family on how they can overcome various challenges. All these will assist in improving the health of the patient.
