Democracy

Democracy has gained global popularity as a political ideology. The rule of the people by the people guarantees the rights of citizens and promotes equality (Ball, Dagger, & O’Neill, 2016). Widely adopted globally, democracy is considered the engine for a prosperous nation. Democracy upholds public good by empowering citizens, sustaining order, and promoting justice.

Democracy owes its origin to Cleisthenes. Cleisthenes is called the father of democracy because through him, a post-monarchial system was formed (Ball et al.,2016). The Romans and Greeks, in general, are the pioneers of democracy as they established the Western civilization, with the aid of Cleisthenes. Cleisthenes proposed a system of government where individuals, especially men, were elected to represent the populous. Improvements were made on the Athenian democracy to the version that is popular in the 21st century.

Democracy has notable features. Democracy entails choosing and replacing the government through elections that are free and fair (Roskin, Cord, Medeiros, & Jones, 2014). Rules are determining the duration a government should last before an election is held. Additionally, there is active participation of people in political and civic matters. In fact, so engaged are the citizens that democracy is defined as a rule of the people by the people. Thirdly, there is the protection of the citizens’ rights. Again, there is the rule of law, which applies to all individuals.

Democracy empowers citizens. Power is in the hands of the people (Roskin et al., 2014). Citizens are free to choose their representatives through elections. The leaders are accountable to the citizens, whom they serve. People also have the right to criticize their government, which improves leadership.Further, the powers of the government are limited. The government seeks public opinion in matters of national importance. Equally, there are checks and balances within the government to ensure that no organ exploits its authority. For instance, the president’s activities are monitored by parliament. In democracy, citizens hold power because as they elect and monitor leaders, and the existence of checks and balances.

Order exists in democracy. The rule of law ensures orderliness among all citizens (Ball et al., 2016). The system of laws equates everyone. People know their rights and obligations under the law, which is called the constitution. The constitution stipulates the conduct of government officials and what should be done should there be a breach of conduct. Similarly, the duties and responsibilities of the citizens are clearly outlined concerning the state and each other. There are also clear outlines on how governments should transition and the process of electing officials. With order, citizens prosper and feel empowered to perform their political and civic duties. Democracy ensures that the conduct of citizens with each other and the state is outlined to promote order.

Justice is notable in democracy. The law protects people from being exploited by each other or government officials. A justice system is established through democracy, which protects the law and persecutes wrongdoers (Ball et al., 2016). In public hearings, all the parties involved are given an equal opportunity to give their accounts. Democracy also protects minority rights. Although the rule of the majority is preserved, the views of the minority are still considered when making policies. With a robust justice system, the people are confident that their rights are secured and due process will be followed during persecution.

Democracy upholds public good by empowering citizens, sustaining order, and promoting justice. The ideology empowers citizens who have substantial control in civic and political processes. The rule of law guarantees order. Comparatively, justice is retained through a justice system and the rule of law.
