Design and Assembly of a Universal Outlet

A universal outlet is a space usually in a wall designed to accommodate a wide range of electrical plugs. For our capstone project, our groupwill design the versatilesocket using various parts we have purchased from Granger Supply in combination with others we have made ourselves. This paper will provide a comprehensive analysis of the process of creating and assembling theproduct. The capstone project explains the parts lists, the bill of materials, the operation process chart, and the route sheet to be followed to create a functional outlet.

Parts List

The parts list we will use in the design and assembling process contains a total of eleven items which we will buy or make ourselves. We intend to acquire the following items from Ganger Supplies: one outlet face plate made of plastic size 2.75” by 4.50” for an estimated $5, a plastic outlet case of size 2” by 3” by 2.5”for about $6, and two extension cords made of rubber or copper size ten feet long and 3.5 mm diameter which we hypothesize to cost about $8. Additionally, we hypothesize to acquire about 10 screws each costing $2, two standard plugs made of plastic copper and brass of size 1.344” by 1.125” for about $3 per plug, and not more than two micro USB plugs made of plastic copper and brass and of size 1.344” by 1.125” hypothesized to cost about $2 per plug. Lastly, we will purchase two converter plugs made of plastic copper and brass and of size 1.344” by 1.125” for about $5 each and two springs made of steel which we hypothesize will cost about $2 each. Also, we intend to make from plastic the following items ourselves: two locking and two reeling mechanisms. All these items to be bought will be sourced from the same point. We intend to implement several tasks to assemble an operating universal outlet.

Bill of Materials

The Bill of Materials used in the design and assembly of the universal outlet is a comprehensive inventory of the assemblies, sub-assemblies, parts, and components used to complete the process. All the materials we intend to purchase from Ganger Supplies will be of the standard measurements, apart from the extension cords and screws which we hypothesize to vary in lengths and quantity respectively based on specifications. Also, the spring, which will be purchased from the same selling point, and the lock and reeling mechanisms which we intend to make ourselves, will vary according to the potential design changes which the group agrees. Accordingly, two retraction mechanisms will be assembled from spring, lock, and reel. We also hypothesize to assemble the extendable plugs from chords and any plugs. We hypothesize to join the outlet case from the retraction mechanisms and the extendable plugs. Finally, we hypothesize to assemble the universal outlet from assembling the outlet case and the face plate and screws.

Route Sheet

The operational process of the design and assembly of a universal outlet will involve a combination of tasks. The first task, although it will not be recorded, will include the delivery of the materials described using trucks. The second step consists of the assembly of reel mechanism using a cylinder, spring, and lock, an operation we hypothesize to consume about 30 minutes. Next, we will assemble the extension cord and plug using screwdriver, metal clamps and a basic toolset, which we hypothesize will take 10 minutes or more. The subsequent step involves creating a non-conducting casing, which will include screws, the back casing, and a rubber buffer. We hypothesize this operation to take no more than 20 minutes. The inspection of the main components will follow. The process will require a ruler and visual measure. Next, we will combine the outputs that we have put together using screws to create the universal outlet. This attempt will take about fifteen minutes. Lastly, we will carry out a final inspection of the universal plug we created and divide the various materials we will assemble into several levels.

Operation Process Charts

The operation chart comprises four levels. The first one, Level 0, represents the final product, the universal outlet. The second is labeled level 1 which includes the face plate and screws and the created outlet case. The third, level 2, encompasses the extended plugs and the retraction mechanism. Lastly, level 3 consists of various plug types, extended plugs, springs, locking and reeling mechanisms.
