Difference between ‘Meeting Expectations’ and ‘Exceeding Expectations’ in a Work Place

INTRODUCTION

Meeting expectations in the workplace usually refers to performing the necessary duties assigned to someone in a normal routine way, as expected by the specific company’s ethics or rather, the employer. Exceeding expectations in the workplace on the other hands refers to working an extra mile past the expectations of the company or the employer hence attracting the attention of the people whom the service is offered to. Meeting expectations normally depend on the employer’s perspective or the company’s ethics, whereas exceeding expectations is self-driven creativity that arise from within an employer; hence it incorporates uniqueness. Following the study done by He, Jie, et al. (2016), it shows that the two aspects are both playing a significant role in preventing underperformance and mess-ups that may occur in workplaces.

 

In line with Myers & James (2014), it is stated that meeting expectations in a workplace can only occur when the employee has interacted and is well acquainted with the standards required to be met by the company; hence the company must have pre-existing ethics to be followed. To side-step messing up does not apply in meeting expectations since the employer does not expect the employee to mess up, but to be up to the company’s ethics. For instance, a restaurant attendant welcoming a customer and giving orders is meeting the expectations for the reason that that is what is expected of them. Habitually performing the regular duties of the company as it is anticipated of someone is merely meeting the expectations. This is handling duties so predictably without creativity. In line with Myers& James (2014), meeting expectations is also said to incorporate performance expected in the workplace in different ways since different managements have got different perceptions.

On the other hand, exceeding expectations vividly describes an extraordinary act in line with the company’s criterions. It means creating something that did not exist before in an influencing manner. Impressing the employer beyond what was anticipated to be done is exceeding expectations. Considering the restaurant attendants yet again, introducing himself to the customer by name, enquiring for the customer’s taste and ordering using figurative language that makes the requested meal seem attractive and appealing is exceeding the expectations. The employee has to anticipate the needs of the company by intentionally necessitating the ideas that the employers have not imagined to be essential. These make the company earn the trust of the employee and crown his competence in the work area amongst other workers. According to Benson, Alexet al. (2016), exceeding expectations in a workplace is also known as outstanding leadership; hence the workers who uniquely do their work are exceptional leaders.

In conclusion, meeting expectations are rationally handling duty as the company’s ethics dictates whereas exceeding expectations incorporates creativity in treating responsibilities in a manner that is not expected by the company. Research shows that a large percentage of workers meet expectations and only a few exceed expectations, hence render them competent over the workers who meet expectations.
