Education Assignment Standards and Objectives

Education Assignment Standards and Objectives

Learning standards used by various institutions help students to learn in different ways. First, learning standards gives a clarification of the goals of education. Therefore, students, teachers and also parents are able to compare the student’s work with the standards put in place. Secondly, it provides students with a clue of what they should be learning and also what the teachers will test them on. Similarly, the teachers, parents and students will understand what their students are in position to do and also what they should know. Therefore, the learning standards assure equity to students. Lastly, learning standards help students to improve on their education since they are able to work together with teachers. Parents, teachers and students can vividly know when their children have or have not attained the quality of education required (Torrance, 2007).

On the other hand, the critical components of learning objectives include the following.

  • A learning objective should be specific
  • It should be measurable or observable
  • It should be attainable. The target group should be within the specified conditions and time.
  • It should be relevant and results-oriented.
  • It should be targeted to the learners. Also, the objectives should target the learners’ desired levels of learning.

There is a difference between learning standard and objective. Learning standards are clear guidelines to students and they describe what they should know and do at every stage of their education.  On the other hand, a learning objective describes how the learners are able to portray their skill, knowledge and attitude after being given the instructions.

Formative assessment is good in that teachers are able to carry out evaluation process on the academic progress of their students. Therefore, it is quite related to the learning standards and objectives. Teachers are able to identify some of the concepts and skills students find difficult to understand and make adjustments to their lessons. Also, if students have no yet achieved their learning standards or objectives, adjustments can be made to the academic support or lessons.

Standard for grade 2: Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal phases. Identify triangle, quadrilaterals, pentagon, hexagon and cubes.

Objective 1: Given a ruler and a pair of protractor, student will measure the angles and length of a table. It will act as a stepping stone indicating the angle and length used to measure the table. Thereafter, the student will explain to his/her colleagues why the measurements are accurate.

Objective 2: After going through some tutorials, students will calculate the angles and measure the length of a carton box to the nearest degrees and meters respectively. The students will then explain why they consider their measurements to be 85% accurate.

For the first objective, I will recommend student to use peer assessment and to use their colleagues as a learning resource. However, for the second objective I would recommend them to use self-assessment. They will be able to reflect and articulate on their activities.
