We are All Crazy
We are all crazy in our own ways. I would like to concentrate more on the field of education to emphasize this analogy. There are various shortcomings in the education sector. Some of these shortcomings are extremely detrimental while others have minimal or no effect at all. The major issue that reflects on how crazy we are is the fact that we keep blaming others for the misfortunes that befall us.
Being a teacher, I have realized that people in this profession are not ready to accept when they make mistakes. There is always a tendency of finding someone else to blame. A good example is with teachers. They are expected to ensure that their students are doing well at school all the time. This is not necessarily the case. There are instances where students’ performances are very poor, but no one wants to take the blame. The teachers are quite adamant that they did all that they could have done. They result to blaming the system and curriculum presented to them. They cite these issues as the main reasons their students are not performing as expected. Some teachers also fail evaluation tests, but still blame the training that they were accorded. No one wants to reflect and see that it may be their attitude that is contributing to all these occurrences. According to them, they are perfect, and there is no way the problem might be on their side.
Top level officials also have a similar problem. They are expected to oversee the implementation of various policies. They should be responsible for any shortcomings realized in the process. This is not always the case. Top level officials will try to find a way of getting the blame from their side. They always blame the incompetence and attitude of the lower level staff (teachers and other relevant individuals) on these shortcomings. All this is crazy. It is clear that things are not going well, but no one is willing to accept that fact. There is no way a lasting solution can be derived when the cause of the problem is not identified.
Current Crises in the Education Sector
Being a special education teacher, it would have been good to concentrate on the crises affecting this particular sector. However, I feel compelled to assess the education sector as a whole. Given the aspect of inclusion, it means that special education is now under the umbrella of general education. Any shortcomings realized here are likely to have a significant effect on special education.
Among the current crisis in education is the imbalance of school resources based on jurisdictions. There is a significant gap between the poorer jurisdictions and wealthier jurisdictions. This is more of a private versus public schools affair. Private schools have way more resources compared to most of the public schools. This is a crisis based on the expectations that are set forward for every student. All the students will be competing for various positions in the job market after school. This means that there are those that will be disadvantaged based on where they schooled. This is not fair at all. Some public schools are even affected more than others based on their jurisdictions. Highest percentages of schools in the poorer districts are funded by the state government through compensatory education programs.
Another prevalent crisis entails poor coordination among the relevant stakeholders in the sector. Many are the times when you find that stakeholders in the education sector are not reading from the same page. Most of their views and actions are contrasting in one way or another. This creates major problems due to the implementation of policies and strategies. There is need of homogeneity if substantial progress is to be attained. The stakeholders act as if they are in competition, and everyone wants to showcase their superiority. This is an issue that is hindering progress and implementation of relevant reforms.
The crises outlined are not closely related to the emphases on time management, personal organization and class size. However, it might be possible that resource allocation in public schools and other poor jurisdictions might be due to the presence of large class sizes. Time management is also affected when the corporation is not enhanced. Everything is always behind schedule.
Expectations about the Crises
There is an expectation that the crisis on resource imbalance might continue for some period. It would take some time and effort before public schools can actualize the status being enjoyed by private schools. This is because government funding is usually limited in various ways. Time and again there have been needs to exercise budget cuts so that the money would be used in other areas that seemed to be of priority.
Issues to do with coordination can be eradicated with time. However, it will not just fix itself. Holding people responsible for their incompetency will help in solving this problem. Due to the chain created, failure in one area is likely to affect another inter-related area. This will enforce coordination since no one wants to run the risk of being unemployed.
