The 21st century learning (P21) movement has a mission of serving as the catalyst for 21st-century learning. Similarly, it builds collaborative partnerships among leaders in sectors such as business, government, community and education. The partnership ensures that learners acquire the necessary knowledge and skills. The 21st-century movement has set its goals, and it is determined to achieve them. The first objective is to ensure that all learners acquire the 21st century’s learning opportunities. It will allow them to prosper as the future’s citizens, workers and leaders. Second, the movement ensures that all learners all over the world acquire a broad range of experience. It will boost their abilities to develop skill and dispositions to succeed in life. Third, the movement ensures that the environment prepare all students to face challenges of life, work and citizenship. Some of the problems include those faced currently and those expected beyond the 21st century. Also, the learning environment ensures continuity in innovation and health of a country’s democracy.
All the goals of the 21st-century movement are relevant. However, I was appealed by one of the goals, and that is, “To ensure that learners acquire the 21st century’s learning opportunities so that they become the future’s leaders, citizens and workers.” Therefore, I recommend the educators to address that theme. We are living in a digital age economy and hence education is paramount for the success of the students. The new economy is being propelled by technology, information and knowledge. It is believed that, the 21st century skills prepare students for the future world without which the students are doomed to succeed in yesterday’s world. The 21st-century movement produces technologically literate students who will have a wide range of knowledge and ability to think critically (Johnson, 2009). The educators must encourage the public to embrace 21st century skills since it is essential to their education. Similarly, all schools must accept new ways of learning that is based on extensive research about people’s learning behaviors and use of technology. Therefore, this will prepare them to become future leaders, worker and parents. When students are not provided with the opportunities to develop 21st century skills, then there is a high possibility of disconnecting the link between the innovative jobs created and the skills available.
My school is trying hard to develop the 21st-century skills so that the learners can successfully manage the information and technology. It does so by systematically following the process. First, the institution needs to learn. The school will have to carry out an investigation of the reason and history behind the 21st-century skill sets. Therefore, it is good to research and argue for the importance of these skills. Second, the schools will advocate by setting a goal that is worth fighting for. The institution would not do it alone; instead it will involve the leadership team. It will require understanding the essential skills and ability to highlight the ones that are worth to be used in learning. The leadership team will also look at the skills that will be beneficial to the society. That is skills that will promote the goals of the learners and also the vision of the school’s district.
Third, the school will have to focus and find the fit of the school. It will involve engaging all stakeholders, and these include teachers, parents, community and business people or leaders. It is also necessary to facilitate discussions on 21st-century skills and accept people’s views after seeing they have understood the whole perspective behind the skill settings. To make it logical, it would be necessary to present some of the pioneer works already in place and try to link it to the 21st-century skills. Through the research, feedbacks and the decisions made, the school will make some commitment to investing its resources in 21st-century skills (Burkhardt, et al., 2003). It will enable the students to achieve their goals of prospering in the digital age.
Fourth, the institution will have to make changes in the system and get everyone ready. Changes will be done in the policies and practice. The school will prepare by acquiring resources, developing curriculum that would support 21st-century skills and support the professional development that is ongoing. Lastly, the school will implement the integrity. It will be done by ensuring that the support systems are established so that the school can succeed. Also, the schools will continue with making a formative assessment, develop professionals and curriculum. Therefore, this will show that the students are ready to prosper in the digital age.
