William Golding in his piece, Lord of the flies, operates from the perspective that in the absence of effective societal policies, human nature converts to barbaric. As a dominant theme in the piece, William embodies the dark side of humankind nature not only through motifs and symbols but through characters like Id, Ego, and Super-ego (Bloom, 2008). The ‘ego’ aspect is conscience, and a sensible decision reaching tool. The ‘super-ego’ on the other hand, exemplifies selfless ideals and actions of the society, as we learn from religious groups, parents and our teachers as well.

Ralph’s charisma personifies the ego. Ego defines the mind’s rational facet. In his duty as a leader, a couple of times Ralph tends to exhibit his rationality. His primary emphasis is working out for a rescue mission. Through arranging the fires, he hopes to capture the attention of passing by a rescue ship. He also exhibits his ‘ego’ personality through his efforts towards the erection of shelters for his tribe members (Golding, 2012). As an effective leader, he tries his best to make sure that every meeting entails proper arrangement and remembers to every individual on their respective roles. His decisions attribute towards a positive outcome just for the goodwill of his group members.

Unlike Ralph, Piggy happens to exemplify the super-ego aspect of undertaking societal standards. However much piggy attempts to delineate a voice of purpose, such actions only turnout complete through the support of Ralph. A super-ego character is a guardian angel to another, in this case, Piggy is Ralph’s super-ego through always helping Ralph to do the moral thing for the benefit of the group(Golding, 2012). Besides helping out Ralph to organize the first meeting, Piggy always presents a character who helps in influencing a voice of reason for a common good.
